    15th Alabama Infantry - Company E

    History

The 15th Regiment of Alabama Infantry was a confederate volunteer unit organized at Fort Mitchell in August of 1861, with eleven companies recruited from Barbour, Dale, Henry, Macon, Pike, and Russell Countie in the southeastern part of the state. Company E was raised in Dale County, which was the most famous company the 15th had, its members were known as the Beauregards.
The regimental active time was from July 3, 1861 – April 9, 1865. With over 900 men the unit started their way which should be very glorious.

In Northern Virginia the 15th was transferred to "Stonewall" Jackson's Divison and took part in his Valley Campaign. After this glorious campaign it fought in the Seven Days Battle. In August 1862 it took part in a lot of battles in Northern Virginia, e.g. in the 2nd Battle of Manassas, where 21 men were killed and 91 men were wounded. They also took part in the investment of Harper's Ferry, with trivial loss.
After this big victories, the 15th Alabama was part of the 1st invasion of the north. In Maryland it fought at Sharpsburg (Antietam).
Back in Virginia, the 15th took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg.

At the Battle of Gettysburg the 15th Alabama got famous for being the regiment that confronted the 20th Maine on Little Round Top on July 2, 1863. Out of 644 men engaged from the 15th Alabama at the Battle of Gettysburg, the regiment lost 72 men killed, 190 wounded, and 81 missing. Before being moved it also fought at Winchester and at Cross Keys with just slight losses. Then the 15th was send to Bragg's Army of the Tennessee, where it fought at the battle of Chickamauga. After it was ordered back to Virginia, the 15th Alabama fought in every big or not so big battle of the years 1864 and 1865 - from the Wilderness and Cold Habour to Petersburg and Appomattox.
The 15th Alabama continued to serve until the surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox Court House on April 9. After the South surrendered to the North, that extremly bloody and brutally fought american civil war ended at least. So there was no more need for the glorious, famous and also rumored 15th Regiment of Alabama Infantry, what resulted in its disbanding.

(Names/Battles that are written fat and red, are those the 15th earned Battle honors for. You can see some of them embroidered on their flag above.)

    Quotes:
"There was no better regiment in the Confederate Army than the Fifteenth Alabama, and when properly commanded, if it failed to carry any point against which it was thrown no other single regiment need try it."
    -- Col. William Calvin Oates

"The 15th Alabama went further than any other troop ... Co. E went as far as any part of the Regiment and stayed as long. The men fired their guns until the barrel became so hot they could not hold and load them."
-- Capt. William Archibald Edwards about the Battle of Gettysburg
