    The point being, if you look real hard at the Sharps he's using it has a carbine stock on it. But it also has a target rifle barrel
    Also from my reading and understanding the early Sharps shot paper covered rounds and not brass casings. The Breech block was used to cut the end off the paper cartridge and expose the powder to the cap.

    This is obviously a post civil war production that he's shooting.

    Hadn't notice the detail about the stock.

    But you are correct about the use of paper cartriges. They also needed percussion caps like a rifle musket.

    I think the rate of fire advantage is one of the main benefit for the average Company.
