Introduction:
Hello All, I am 1st Lieutenant William D. Hastee of the 1st Virginia Infantry, Company D. I am here on behalf of Captain Jake Griswold to provide you with information on our company, The Old Dominion Guard, should you be looking to join up or simply gain more knowledge. Myself and my two fellow officers of Company D have been reenacting the Civil War anywhere between 4 and 8 years know and it is our hope to impart some of our knowledge with others here in the community. Our hope is to perform as a coherent company to the utmost authenticity. Once we are a mustered company we will be holding regularly scheduled drill so that we may be sharp and ready when the time comes to march to war. Prior knowledge of the period or reenacting experience is not a requirement, just friendly attitude and a willingness to learn. So if that sounds like you, then feel free to enlist! A Brief History of the 1st VA:
The 1st Virgina was organized as a volunteer infantry division in early April of 1861 in Richmond, Virginia under the command of Colonel Patrick T. Moore. The Old Dominion Guard was mustered into service as Company D on the 29th of the same month. The regiment first saw action on July 18th, 1861 in a skirmish at Blackburn's Ford with the regiment being part of General James Longstreet's command, where he would later say this of their actions: "The Old First Regiment was with me at Bull Run on the 18th of July, and made the first fight of Bull Run, which drove the Federals and forced them around Sudley Springs. This move on their part was the cause of delay that gave us time to draw our troops down from the Valley, and concentrate for the fight of the 21st. The heavy part of this fight was made by the old First Regiment, so that it can well claim to have done more towards the success of the First Manassas than any one regiment. This too, was their first battle, and I can say that its officers and men did their duties as well, if not better, than any troops whose service came under my observation." The 1st Virginia would go on to fight just as valiantly in many of the larger engagements of the eastern theater of the war, including Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. Originally Called up with 570 men in April of 1861, it would be with General Lee at the end of the war in April of 1865 where it would surrender with only 17.
Unlike many of the confederate regiments during the war, the 1st Virginia was supplied with, and adhered to a strict uniform throughout the war. This consisted of a medium grey shell jacket of frock coat with sky blue trim on the collar and cuffs. The jacket or coat was also to have 9 brass buttons stamped with the letter "I" for infantry stacked in a single column down the center of the uniform. The headgear was a medium grey kepi with a sky blue band and a black leather bill. The trousers were also sky blue, and each piece of the uniform was made of wool.
