    Diplomatic Whirlpool

Europe is a buzz of diplomacy and politics. Nations aiming to ease the tensions in Europe send diplomats and envoys flying back and forth, negotiating treaties and agreements. Despite these attempts to ease tensions the feeling in Europe is still one of deep unease.

Italy has faced embarrassment before the rest of Europe when the highly popular paper “Il Messaggero” printed an article claiming that the Dutch diplomatic party to Italy were National Separatists! The Dutch ambassador to Italy has demanded an apology and compensation for such slanderous claims, going so far as to demand the arrest of the writer of the article and resignation of the editor. Wars have been started over lesser matters and though the world doubts that a war will begin, the tension in the air can still very much be felt. A strong sense of relief was breathed by many in Italy however. The paper chose to go after a minor nation and not a major power!

In the Balkans however matters are beginning to spiral down hill. Following an announcement by the Ottoman Empire for plans to annex Bulgaria the Government of Tsar Ferdinand I, under the leadership of Vasil Radoslavov, has severed diplomatic relations with the Empire ending their alliance! Alongside this move the border between the two nations has been shut and the border guards strengthened with regular forces. The announcement by the Ottomans has utterly backfired for them and the Balkans are now close to spilling over. Bulgaria for the first time has bowed its head to the fellow nations of the Balkans and requested that diplomatic relations between themselves, Greece and Romania be improved. Might this spell disaster for the Ottomans and their already waning grip on the Balkans?

The greatest surprise however has been the recent announcement of negotiations between France and Germany. Following a proposed non-aggression pact by France the two European powerhouses have entered negotiations over said proposal. This comes as a great surprise after Germany’s initial act of only seeking to improve relations with two of the three Entente powers and France’s military posturing. Europe can only sit and wait whilst diplomats from both nations work hard to reach an agreement.
