Great European War.
What started out as a possible contained war between Belgium, The Netherlands and Denmark has swiftly exploded into a growing European wide conflict. Following the German invasion of Denmark on the 16th July, Denmark's ally, Belgium, were swift to declare war upon Germany in support on the 4th June 1914. This declaration begun a chain reaction of alliances. On the 6th France declared war upon Germany, much to the horror of the German and French diplomats that had worked so hard to try and reach the non-aggression pact that had now been broken. The 8th saw the British declaration and the 12th the Portuguese declaration. In a bid to try and end things swiftly peace negotiations between Denmark and Germany were held in Sweden. They did not last long and after three days the German delegation left Sweden empty handed and fuming.
Though Russia has kept out of the war but has instead formed the The Treaty of Sevastopol. This treaty stands as a great threat to Austro-Hungarian, who was also yet to enter the war, goals in the Balkans. Calls for peace discussion by the Ottomans Empire stalled due to the sudden explosion of the Third Schleswig War seeing one of the best possible routes for a prevention of escalation ended. The mood in Vienna and St. Petersburg were both respectively dim with pro and anti war groups arguing day and night over where the governments of each nation should go. Rome also was feeling great strain in its parliament, only with ministers arguing over if they should remain with the Central Powers or join the Entente much to the dismay of Germany. Across Europe this same argument was being had with Sofia, Ankara and Bucharest feeling this push and pull very strongly within parliament and its people.
The Netherlands saw the victory of the “Sociaal Democratische Arbeiders Parti” in the elections that had been declared two months prior. This victory has seen the ousting of the passive Liberal government under Pieter Cort van der Linden who had unwisely given the vote to the Women of his nation in a hope to win the election. This sudden introduction of suffrage had resulted in much chaos in many of the more conservative area of the Netherlands with many women being blocked from voting. The new government under Pieter Jelles Troelstra won by a good margin with promises of crushing the invading Belgians, better worker’s rights, revenge for the French blockade and once victory was achieved the forcing of Belgium to pay for the war!
