8th Alabama Infantry - fünf lange Jahre und noch immer kein Ende in Sicht!

Genau heute vor fünf Jahren, also am 5. April 2019, wurde die 8th Alabama Infantry, Co. G mit wenigen Spielern und unter ihrem damaligen CO Captain Schimmelfennig gegründet. Warum genau diese Einheit als historisches Vorbild? Weil diese Kompanie G aus dem County Mobile, die im Mai 1861 in Montgomery, AL Teil der glorreichen 8th Alabama Infantry wurde, den Beinamen "German Fusileers" trug. Sie war eine von ca. 40 bestehenden Kompanien der uniformierten Freiwilligenmiliz, die entscheidend zur schnellen Aufstellung der frühen konföderierten Regimenter aus Alabama beigetragen haben.

Aus diesem kleinen Kern engagierter Spieler, die zuvor schon in anderen Einheiten aktiv waren, hat sich dann über die Jahre die heutige Kompanie herausgebildet. Über Höhen und Tiefen hinweg und trotz einiger personeller Wechsel an der Spitze hat sich der Kern Aktiven doch erhalten. Regelmäßig konnten und können wir neue Freiwillige für unsere Einheit und auch für War of Rights insgesamt begeistern; das hält die Einheit jung und sorgt für eine ständige Erneuerung. An alten Ritualen wird trotzdem festgehalten, z.B. an den regelmäßigen Hauptdrills und auch den Zusatzdrills unter der Woche und natürlich der durchgehenden Teilnahme an allen Gefechten der UEC an Freitagen und Samstagen sowie auch an den kleinen Picket Patrol-Runden der TGV immer montags. An all diesen Tagen können unsere Mitglieder sich einbringen und mitmachen, es muss aber keiner. Und immer noch machen wir unsere Nachbesprechungen der großen Gefechte auf unserem Drillcamp in gemütlicher Runde bei Dunkelheit am Lagerfeuer.

Diese fünf Jahre hinweg ist die 8th Alabama nicht alleine geschritten, sondern immer in Begleitung mit unseren Partnereinheiten zunächst nur der TGV und dann auch der UEC. Auch hier hat man sich einmal aneinander gerieben, aber allen Einheiten gemein war der Spaß an War of Rights und am gemeinsamen historisch angelegten Spielerlebnis. Das führte dann durchaus auch mal zum Treffen im realen Leben oder auch zur gemeinsamen Teilnahme von WoR-Spielern an Reenactments im Rahmen des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges. An dieser Stelle einen herzlichen Gruß an alle, die den Weg bislang mit uns gemeinsam gegangen sind!

Die 8th Alabama ist schon lange erwachsen geworden, aber alt ist sie noch lange nicht. Und so wird es weitergehen mit uns und War of Rights, und gemeinsam werden wir uns den zwei letzten großen Fragen stellen:
1. Was ist der Sinn des Lebens? Und
2. wird es wohl jemals Kavallerie geben in WoR?

In diesem Sinne: Auf die nächsten fünf Jahre! Für Dixie!

Exactly five years ago today, on April 5, 2019, the 8th Alabama Infantry, Co. G was founded by a few players and under its original CO Captain Schimmelfennig. Why exactly this unit as a historical model? Because this Company G from Mobile County, which became part of the glorious 8th Alabama Infantry in Montgomery, AL in May 1861, was nicknamed the "German Fusileers". It was one of about 40 existing companies of uniformed volunteer militia that contributed significantly to the rapid formation of the early Confederate regiments from Alabama.

Over the years, beginning with this small core of dedicated players who had previously been active in other units, the unit developed into the company we know today. Through ups and downs and despite a few personnel changes at the top, the core of active players has remained intact. We have regularly been able to attract new volunteers to our unit and to War of Rights as a whole; this keeps the unit young and ensures constant renewal. Nevertheless, old rituals are maintained, e.g. the regular main drills and also the additional drills during the week and of course the continuous participation in all battles of the UEC on Fridays and Saturdays as well as in the small Picket Patrol rounds of the TGV every Monday. Our members can get involved on all these days, but nobody has to. And we still have our debriefings of the big events at our drill camp in a convivial atmosphere around the campfire in the dark.

During these five years, the 8th Alabama did not march alone, but was always accompanied by our partner units, initially only the TGV and then also the UEC. Here, too, people sometimes jostled with each other, but what all units had in common was the fun with War of Rights and the shared historical gaming experience. This also led to meetings in real life or to the joint participation of WoR players in re-enactments of the American Civil War. At this point, a heartfelt greeting to all those who have traveled this path with us so far!

The 8th Alabama has long since grown up, but it is far from being old. And so we will continue with us and War of Rights, and together we will ask ourselves the last two important questions:

1. What is the meaning of life? And
2. will there ever be cavalry in WoR?

With this in mind: Here's to the next five years! For Dixie!
