Hello there!

I want to know about anyone's ancestors regiments! This topic has interested me for a long time and I took me a while to find my ancestors units. One ancestor was in the Cavalry of the Hamptons Legion and another one was in the 24th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry

Not to mention that I also have Hunt's in my family tree as well. Does the name H.J. Hunt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Jackson_Hunt) ring any bells?

We'll have you used the National Park Service archive, you can enter the persons name and what state they were from and what side, it will give just a little info but enough

Fold3.com is what I use, it cost money but it gives a good deal of information, if you use it along with Ancestry.com you can know for sure if it's your ancestor and not someone with a similar name.

I got an interesting one.
My Ancestor Frank Rouleau was a French Canadian born in Montreal, who for some reason decided one day to immigrate to Mississippi.
There he joined the 2nd Battalion, Mississippi Infantry Company C as a Private in the summer of 1861 when the battalion was mustered, totaling 360 men.
The battalion was assigned to General Garland's and Featherston's Brigade seeing combat in Williamsburg to Sharpsburg.
In November 1862, additional companies joined and formed the 48th Mississippi Regiment commanded by Lieutenant Colonels Thomas B. Manlove, John G. Taylor, and William S. Wilson.
The 48th would go on to see combat at Fredricksburg to Cold Harbor and on. Frank's part in the war ended shortly before the Battle of Chancellorsville, where he deserted at the rank of Corporal.
He was be captured by the Union and took the Oath of Allegiance, afterwards he settled down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Also as a silly little addition, on every single muster card before he deserted, his last name was never spelled correctly. One even spelled it as Rolo. He was either illiterate or simply couldn't read and write in English.

Nice, does it work well for you? I recommend it to anyone looking to do some family research. it's kind of expensive, the most expensive plan cost around $40-50 a month or around $300 a year if you do it that way.

Edit: that price is for access to the whole deal, Ancestry, Fold3, Newspapers etc.
If you want just fold3 it's only about $9 a month

This is gonna be a rich one :D

To start, my mother's side was Union, idk what his name was or anything other that he was union, I have his revolver holster :)

Now that we got the Yankee out of the way, my Great-Great-Great Grandfather is this guy here http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=18628720

He was a Pvt. in Capt. James S. Smythe's Vol. Cav. Co. 1st Miss. Partisan Rangers. His uncle was James Smythe, who was the Captain of the company he served in. If you look closely at the tombstone, at the bottom it has something interesting on it, says that President Davis said he was the best harnessmaker in the Confederate Army. People in that time weren't as much of liars as they are know, (as far as I know) so I'm 99% sure that is legit. Not to mention he was a Freemason.

Cool as shit to know this stuff :D

I'm sure if you look through all the different lines you'll find someone who fought. It took me a while but I found out that quite a bit of my family fought, at first I could only find 1 or 2 who fought, it just takes some digging

I had several relatives from Oswego County, New York in the 147th and 110th New York Infantry. Simon , Seth and Albert D. Potter (Co. E - 147th Inf) killed in action on the same day at Gettysburg July 1,1863 , Luke Potter (Co.C -147th Inf.) died earlier the same year in a hospital in Washington DC. Surviving the war - Latham Potter (Co. E - 147th Inf) & John Potter (Co.K & Co.E-147th Inf) and Albert J. Potter (Co.C-110th Inf.) & Hiram Potter (Co.C -110th Inf.) . Moses Potter (21st Battery) was captured sent to Andersonville Prison. On the lighter side , here is a picture that makes me laugh everytime I see it. Albert J. Potter is in the center the Two gentlemen on both sides of him both lost a leg in the Civil War and were brother in laws and wore the same size shoes so they only had to buy one pair and share them.
