History

2nd Infantry Regiment [also called 2nd Palmetto Regiment] completed its organization near Richmond, Virginia. This regiment was called into State service about April 9, 1861 for twelve months. It was mustered into the Confederate States service May 22, 1861, and re-organized for the war in May, 1862. About April 9, 1865, the 2nd (Palmetto) Regiment Infantry was consolidated with the 20th Regiment South Caroina Infantry and a part of Blanchard's South Carolina Reserves and formed the new 2nd Regiment South Carolina Infantry. The men were from Columbia, Camden, and Charleston, and the counties of Sumter, Richland, Greenville, Kershaw, and Lancaster.

First Manassas was the brigade’s baptism of fire. The Seven Days, Second Manassas, Harper’s Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chandellorsville, and Gettysburg followed. And when the enemy began knocking at the back door of the Confederacy in late 1863, it was Longstreet’s corps that General Lee rushed to the aid of Bragg’s faltering Army of Tennessee.

After the victory at Chickamauga and a winter in East Tennessee, the corps was recalled to Virginia, and to the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and the Shenandoah Valley. Then, once again, as Sherman’s might machine rolled relentlessly over Georgia and into South Carolina in 1865, Kershaw’s Brigade was transferred “Back Home,” as Capt. Dickert proudly puts it, “to fight the invader on our own native soil.” It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.

From the history site it states: "The 2nd South Carolina participated in as many, if not more, battles than any other regiment on either side. It is one of the few units that was established before the bombardment of Fort Sumter and existed until several weeks after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. It established itself as one of the elite shock troop units of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia ." This regiment was a part of Kershaw's Brigade.

I'm a reenactor who has trained and drilled in Hardee's Tactics. I even have a copy. I've personally done the maneuvers and I have personally fired live rounds from an 1853 .58 Enfield Rifled Musket. I'm also a bugler versed in bugle calls.

I've smelled the smells, slept in the tents and woke up covered in frost, warmed myself at a camp fire, felt the rifle kick against my shoulder, done the Rebel Yell, charged the Yankees, done the marching, worn the gear, stacked the rifles (Kentucky swing of course): I've seen the elephant!

You'll be no more authentic than if you follow me in my company!

If you want to be led by someone with real life experience, follow me to the battle lines!

Come boys, Come!

The First Battalion of Virginian Regulars salutes you boys. It's good to see some more South Carolinian boys! Just as we would not march into other lands and tyrannize their people - we will not allow the Federal government to march into our lands and tyrannize our people. We wish you the best of luck in the coming war, hopefully most of your boys make it home - give em' hell Carolina!

Godspeed,

Hey mate I just saw this thread. I'm not very active on these forums or on steam really. But I'm going to be getting a new computer this year. And I plan for that to change.

But I'm interested in talking and seeing about joining yall. I was born and raised in Columbia SC. I still live here. I've got family who are pretty big into reenacting. Well they were until my uncle passed away. But my cousins boyfriend who is also my bestfriend now. Is big into it. And he let me come along with him twice.

Like you ive froze my butt off in the tent. At broxtons bridge. At around campfires. Learned the movement and stood in lines and fired at the invaders. I bought my own gear. And own a uniform and enfield.

I've always been a history buff. Specially a war buff. WWII being my speciality. But I have more passion for my southern heritage. Love the civil war and I love the revolutionary war too.

Anyways that's a bit about myself. Oh also I'm 22 about to turn 23 if that matters. And I'm currently doing research because I may have found some family that fought in the 5th SC in the revolution.

Thank you Captain. I hope to be of worthwhile service. Now, for a little about my background and qualifications: I have been a re-enactor of the recent unpleasantness since 1988, having first seen the elephant at 125th Gettysburg. I have primarily been infantry, but have also served a field piece and done dismounted cavalry. If anyone should think of deserting or otherwise breaking military law, I also served extensively as Provost Guard :p I have studied tactics and strategy quite a bit, and utilizing that knowledge beat the Union Army of the Potomac on Talon Soft's Battleground: Antietam with losses of approximately 23,000 to my 2,200. Much of the success of the 2nd SC, Co. C will depend on everyone doing their part as they are commanded. One of the surest ways to be shot in battle is to break ranks and charge ahead of your comrades. This notwithstanding, your odds of being killed or wounded would still have been about one in three. I wish everyone present and future in the "Columbia Grays" good luck. I look forward to serving with you all.
