Post your favorite civil war movies to watch!

Glory

The Good, The Bad, And the ugly (ok its not about the civil war, but it does involve it and a rather large battle for a bridge, and a union prison camp)

post yours!

I suppose Gettysburg (1993) is one of the usual suspects :p

Can't say I've seen many other civil war movies, besides the ones you already mentioned yourself, so I'm looking forward to seeing what other people post here

Gods and Generals [Prequel to Gettysburg (Stephen Lang does a great Stonewall)]Gone with the Wind [Great for illustrating life in the South in some ways/romanticized in others]Red Badge of Courage [A little dated, still good in my opinion]Ken Burns' - The Civil War [Not a movie, but a great documentary series that amounts to... at least 6 movies, with great information riddled throughout it's hours of great photos and music capturing the time period]

^^ Just gave you about... 30-40 hours of footage to watch if you haven't seen any of these. Hope this was of some help :)

I also have YouTube links to some really cool battle documentaries if you'd like them!!!

Sincerely,

Gods and Generals, Gettysburg a Glory are my favorites. Field of Lost Shoes was good...more of an emotional appeal in that movie. It kind of made things personal.

Gods and Generals is highly recommended. All the links posted above were great. Only civil war movie you should not watch is field of lost shoes. The movie is far too awful to even talk about.

I was cringing the entire time I was watching it. I remember in the battle scene, a artillery shell hit smack in the middle of their line. They all fell down then got up like it was nothing..... To W1Z25, please stay away from field of lost shoes. It will be a total waste of your time.

I'd have to go with Gettysburg for my all time favorite. Notable mentions include Gods and Generals and The Undefeated.

Aside from the ones mentioned above, here's some pretty good Westerns set either during or immediately after the war:

California (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/California) - Where my profile pic comes from, end and aftermath of the war
The Hellbenders (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Crudeli,_I) - Post CW
A Reason to Live, A Reason to Die (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Ragione_per_vivere_e_una_per_morire,_Una)
Kill Them All and Come Back Alone (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Ammazzali_tutti_e_torna_solo)
If I come up with any more I'll let you know!
And I did come up with some more:
I Want Him Dead (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Lo_voglio_morto) - Post CW, straggler unit of Confed soldiers
A Bullet for Sandoval (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Quei_disperati_che_puzzano_di_sudore_e_di_morte) - Original Italian title translates to "Those Desperate Men Who Smell of Dirt and Death", which is fucking badass
The Dirty Outlaws (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Desperado,_El)
Fort Yuma Gold (http://www.spaghetti-western.net/index.php/Per_pochi_dollari_ancora) - Post CW

The only ones I can think of that haven't been listed already are Andersonville and Gangs of New York (the war is more of a back drop, but there is the New York City daft riot in the movie.)

Yes The battle scene could of been a lot better, that goes for a lot of movies though. Can't really judge a movie for a battle scene that wasn't even the main focus on the movie. The whole reason for the love story was trying to get you emotionally involved in a character. It's a classic move made by "again" a lot of movies that only have a short time to get you to get emotionally connected with a character to make whatever happens to them hit home more.

With that said the main themes of the movie were how the civil war affected all american. How even though they were young and scared and not fully with the idea of slavery, the thought of protecting their homes from a foreign invader fueled them. And how bad the civil war really was, with even children fighting in it battles. So please don't tell someone that watching said movie is a waste of time because you didn't like it. Especially since the thing you pointed out (even though it may have not been the only thing that made you cringe) was part of scene of the movie that wasn't even the focus of it.

Well funny enough I haven't seen it. Honestly in the past years the only movies I watch are either on Netflix or Youtube. I even seldom go to the movies. With that and I haven't really been interested in the ACW until last year. I've been wanting to watch Gettysburg but it's not on Neflix or Youtube, and I haven't seen it in local stores in the movie section. Probably have to buy it off amazon or something.

Back in 1991 there was a television movie aired called IRONCLADS. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102129/) The sound stage was in a local warehouse in Richmond VA where I was living at the time. I made it to the sound stage after the filming and walked on the gun decks of both the Merrimack and the Monitor. I have some 35mm pictures of that adventure around here somewhere. The battle of the ships in the Roads was actually scale models filmed in England. But all the gun deck shots were filmed on a soundstage in a Richmond warehouse. And I was there.
