We are the 34th New York, Company K. We are a European based company and dedicated to making this game as enjoyable and immersive an experience as possible for those within our ranks. We are prioritising historical accuracy and a tight, disciplined roleplay format so as to be immersive as possible during fights. This means we are a milsim unit focused on authenticity. About The Regiment
Historically, the 34th New York was quite active around the earlier years of the war. The regiment was organized in Albany, New York on May 24, 1861 and was mustered in for a two year enlistment on June 15, 1861; it was composed of five companies from Herkimer County, two from Steuben, one from Albany, one from Clinton and one from Essex County. Part of the 38th Militia entered this regiment on June 8, 1863; the regiment was mustered out of service on June 30, 1863, and those men who had signed three year enlistments were transferred to the 82nd New York.During their roughly two years of service, the regiment fought in many engagements. The battle of Ball's Bluff in October 21st marked the first battle, and the first defeat of the regiment. Into 1862, the regiment performed in the inconclusive Siege of Yorktown in the Spring under the command of George McClellan. Still under the command of the intrepid strategist McClellan, the regiment took part in yet another inconclusive fight at the Battle of Seven Pines in late May/early June. Next up for the 34th New York was the Seven Days Battles fought between June 25th - July 1st, 1862 in which Robert Lee was able to kick McClellan and the Army of the Potomac away from Richmond and into Northern Virginia and later Maryland. On September 17th, 1862 the bloodiest single day battle in United States history took place at Antietam. It was also the first engagement fought in Union territory since the war had broke out. Although the battle was inconclusive, the Union side claimed it a victory due to the fact that the Confederates had vacated the battlefield first. It is during the battle of Antietam that we have a proper record of the 34th New York's role in the battle.
At 7:30 on the morning of September 17, 1862, the Thirty-fourth Regiment left camp near Keedysville, crossed the Antietam Creek and marched westward into the East Woods, now extinct. Facing Westward being on the extreme left of Brigade line it emerged from the East Woods and soon became heavily engaged with the Confederate forces in its front. Crossing the open field and the Hagerstown Pike, it entered the West Woods, now also extinct, the line extending North and South of the Dunkard Church. The left of the Regiment being unprotected was in danger of being enveloped by the enemy, and a hasty retreat became necessary; the Regiment reforming near the East Woods with its organization intact. In a very brief time 43 men had been killed and 74 wounded, the killed being 13 percent of all engaged. The regiment was detached from the brigade and moved directly to the front, together with the 125th Pennsylvania Infantry, a new regiment of nine months men. This support was almost fatal to the 34th, for when in the thickest of the fight, the new lines broke and ran, leaving Suiter's command to take care of themselves. In the closing month of 1862, the regiment partook in the battle of Fredericksburg between 11th - 15th December. The Army of the Potomac under the command of Ambrose Burnside was greatly humbled by Robert Lee's Army of Northern Virginia when Union casualties exceeded Confederate casualties more than two to one. The engagement was described to President Lincoln as a "butchery" by a visitor to the battlefield. The final engagement for the 34th New York, before their merge with the 82nd New York for Gettysburg, was the Battle of Chancellorsville fought between 30th April - 6th May 1863. A resounding defeat for the Union as Robert Lee was able to win what is often described as his "perfect battle" while losing his most prized and successful commander in Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. It was after this engagement that the 34th New York Volunteer Infantry was mustered out on June 30th 1863 and the remaining soldiers who signed three year enlistment terms were merged into the 82nd New York, who went on to fight at Gettysburg days later and end the war at the Siege of Petersburg.
