Well, let's see it. Show us your favorite Civil War picture or scene in a movie, a game, or anything really. It can even be a photograph from the period if you want. Here's my personal favorite from Cold Mountain. Movie is kinda a chick flick but has a few good battle scenes. Siege of Petersburg, mmmmm, my favorite. It's not completely historically accurate but shows the more gritty, less glorious, more gory side of the war. Very intense.

Thats a really nice thread...even though i cannot pick a favorite from a movie or a game ( ACW Mod for Empire Total War) so here are my two "favorite" moments:

1.) Movie Gettysburg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUHnL6R39VM General Armistead charge the center and makes his famous quote, since i like every second of this movie this scene still gives me chills. The last desperate attempt to win freedom and the carnage which results of it...

2.) Game ACW MOD (Version unknown): Unfortunately i have no screenshots of the battle, near Richmond, but maybe a short description is sufficient. I was fighting on the confederate site and met nearly 2 full stack union armys:
(battle strength 100%) some militia but mostly regulars with overall 8 ppeaces of artillery (6 pounders horse drawn) with my shattered army: (battle strength 60 % but pretty experienced) mostly militia (6) and the stonewall brigade (two regiments) and three peaces of artillery (Napoleon) the battle started with a great barrage artillery where i managed to route their arty units (5 of them) then the infantry attacked me and fierce fighting was going on. The terrain was the following: my left flank was within light woods, my center on a little ridge and the right flank on open ground, the reserve was not existing since the fight caused me to send it to the left within the first minutes. The fighting went pretty well for me, but was costly for both sides and i was running out of ammunition. This was were the other stack entered the battle, exactly behind my right flank. At the same time my left collapsed ant the Yankees were about to crash my whole but i managed to drive them back with what left of my left flank and all units from the center and made them all run.

Meanwhile their second stack mowed down my right flank and whipped it out entirely, so i send the rest of my army to the right at set them up for their last stand. The next minutes were full of men changing shots from close range, then the ammo was running out and i ordered an all-or-nothing bayonet attack which slammed right into their center and caused panic on their ranks...the stonewall brigade saved the day and dispelled the Yanks. My best battle/ gaming moment i have ever had so far, maybe i find some Screenshots of it later.

Indeed I heard rumor at the 150th Gettysburg during Pickett's charge they had more reenactors on the wall then were actually there.

Lets stretch this out to music as well. Here's a song (also from Cold Mountain) called Wayfaring Stranger. A traditional Folk Song from the early 19th century that talks about the journey through life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70_3ho_j0yk

Ah you picked my favorite song from that movie! Being able to pick a favorite song in general there are just so many. I have always been very fond of the minstrel boy. or maybe Mrs. McGrath (Very Popular among the Irish) it is a very catchy song set during the Peninsular War. In the links posted both songs are preformed by the 97th Regimental String Band.

Ooh! Something I can actually contribute to!

A personal favorite is this lovely gem here:
Lincoln and Liberty

But, when it comes to a more mournful song, I have been known to sing this one on occasion at some of my reenactments...
Tenting Tonight

If anyone is interested, I can relate the story of how this song came to be.

I dont think too many people here would object to a history lesson sir!

Speaking of Mournful songs what about just before the battle mother???

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1p3hdoqtAE I completely forgot about this song

Well, the story of Tenting Tonight revolves around our lovely author, Walter C. Kittredge. He was a songwriter for minstrel shows and vaudeville acts from New Hampshire, and in April of 1863, was one of many unfortunates that were drafted into the army. He knew that his comrades in arms would soon learn of his pre-conscription employment, and would want a song, and he also thought of the wife and young daughter he would be leaving behind as he crafted the doleful lyrics. He published the song just prior to leaving for his required posting, but never even reached the camps, as he was rejected on medical grounds. On joyfully returning home, he continued on to join the Hutchinson singing group, and went on with them for another 20 years.

The song, however, took off as a very popular tune, despite the melancholy air. The officers in camp quickly made to banish its being sung, due to it being so disheartening and morale reducing. However, when the officers were not around, the men would gather and sing the tune, as it plucked at their heart strings and at the memories of homes and families that were as distant as if they were on the moon.

Hmmm, that's interesting. His posture and the way he holds his gun seem uncommon for the photos of the time. Maybe he was just cooler than everyone else in the 1860's....

Keep in mind that the above link was still unflipped, in it's original form from having been produced. I went ahead and flipped it below, plus messed with the levels to make it a little easier to see.

I know this thread is old, but I don't think this video has been posted yet. It's from the 150th Sharpsburg or "Maryland my Maryland" portraying the early morning fight in the Cornfield. They try and show the Tigers get pinned on the Hagerstown Turnpike, but they can't do it right and do it safe at the same time. This is by far the best reenacting video there is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAt5O8ax0l0

Also here's the NPS documentary on Antietam. It is by far the best because of the quality of the reenactors, all authentics.

I heard this song awhile back and it haunts me to this day it is arguably one of the saddest songs about the Civil War "Coming to us Dead"
