1st Illinois Volunteer Artillery, Battery A


Mustered on April 17, 1861 in Cook County by Gov. Yates as the first call to arms by President Abraham Lincoln. It from then proceeded to form up on the banks of the Mississippi to ward off any ships attempting to bring goods to the Confederate States of America. They fought valiantly, capturing the steamers C. E. Hillman and J. D. Perry, and seized many munitions and armaments bound for the south.
