The 2nd Delaware Regiment of Volunteers was the first full three-year enlistment regiment of the War, the 1st Delaware regiment initially consisting of only 90-day men. The 2nd Delaware joined the Army of the Potomac in time for the Seven Days Battles and Second Bull Run. When the Army of the Potomac fought against the Maryland Campaign, the 2nd Delaware would've pierced the lines with the other regiments of Brooke's brigade in the 2nd Corps but were withdrawn due to the death of Major General Israel Richardson. Marching slowly back to the enemy lines, the 2nd Delaware was cheered on by the rest of the Union troops around them. Even Major General James Longstreet admitted that the brigade would've broken through the defense at the Sunken Road, then only guarded by a badly cut up Confederate battery. A single New York reporter said that the regiment was "crazy not to get out of there when the could," forever christening the regiment with the name "The Crazy Delawares".

On the second day of Gettysburg, when the II Corps arrived with the rest of the Union army, they would fight admirably at the Wheat Field, counterattacking the enemy. By the end of the day, they settled in at the foot of Little Round Top. The following day, after hearing of Pickett's Charge, a Captain Evans led company A into enemy lines in front of them, capturing prisoners greater than their own number. They had missed the Battle of the Wilderness when Grant began his Overland campaign. But their next battle would generally be their last. During the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, they were part of the initial attack lead by the II Corps but withstood Confederate counterattack, practically wiping out the regiment. There were so few men left that they were then attached to the 1st Delaware Regiment, quite a feat since even regiments with 100 men still served. Company A is made in honor of not only the regiment, but the mortally wounding of the Captain Evans that captured so many Confederates during Gettysburg.

Like any other regiment, we're always looking to recruit anyone who wishes to join the regiment. Add `oG | Carl Schurz on Steam or send me a message via War of Rights. I check it every day or so.
