History

The Fifth New York was formed in April of 1861 days after the firing on Fort Sumter. The regiments forming Colonel Abram Duryee was instrumental in the units conception in gathering a unique group of men coming from the middle, upper classes of society, and even veterans from foreign wars. The Fifth New York not only was highly educated but also had a capable officer corps as Colonel Duryee enlisted the aide of many of his officers from the crack 7th New York regiment but also three of the ten company commanders were West Point educated along with Lieutenant Colonel and future Colonel Gouverneur Kemble Warren. After the regiment had completed their initial training they were assigned to Third Brigade, Second Division, V Corps and it is shortly after this that the regiment had its baptism of fire at the Battle of Big Bethel. Shortly after the battle on July 25th the regiment was reassigned to a 8 month stint of garrison duty in Baltimore, Maryland. During this time the residents of Baltimore slowly fell in love with the regiment as they honed their skills as soldiers under their new Colonel Gouverneur Warren. At the end of their garrison duty the regiment joined General McClellan's fated Peninsular Campaign. Here they covered the Union retreat at Malvern Hill and proved their worth in repeated bayonet charges at the Battle of Gaines Mill. However, a few days later the regiment found itself engaged against Lee's army at the Battle of Second Manassas. It is here that the regiment had gained their fame. As they stood on the left flank of the Union Army and sacrificed their existence against General Longstreet's division. Here they sustained the highest combat loss of the Civil War for in ten minutes out of the 462 men brought into action 124 were killed or mortally wounded and another 223 wounded. According to one soldier the battle was described as "Where the regiment stood that day was the very vortex of hell. Not only were men killed and wounded, they were riddled." Their sacrifice was not in vain as their stand provided warning to General Pope to refused the line and save his army from being crushed. The regiment would later be addressed by Lincoln after the battle who stated " Boys, your thinned ranks and tattered flags tell the story of your bravery, the people thank you and so do I." The Fifth would go on to serve at Antietam,Fredericksburg, and finally Chancellorsville where they were sent home and mustered out of service in 1863. The regiment during its service was famed for their military discipline and was considered the best troops the Union Army by many. They were Generals McClellan's favorite regiment and they often times served as his guards. Furthermore, another mark of their military proficiency lay in their assignment to V Corps and specifically Second Division as the commander General George Sykes kept his division purely Regulars. As Major Wainwright a regular officer pointed out that the Fifth was "equal in all respects to the regulars and better drilled."
