View Full Version : What about cavalry?

We haven't really heard much about cavalry. Will we be seeing any development updates on it? Or is there no cavalry? If information has already been released about it, i'm sorry. Please tell me where I can see.

I don't think anything has been said about cav. Judging from recent talk, the initial release of the "Skirmish" mode seems like it might only entail basic infantry. I will leave the rest up to developers.

horses are hard to animate I think and need all coding for like jumping and eating apples.

Cynfar

While eating apples is most important

While cavalry is needed, for scouting for example, its not a top priority atm.

Cynfar

So if its needed you will add cavalry to the "full" release?

Hinkel

Yes.. like we said in the last field report, we will update those Skirmish Battles with new features over the time.
Maybe cavalry will be in one of the future updates :)

That is what I thought, thanks for clarifying. I can definitely see where it would be a pain in the butt to add new animations for charges and formation problems and all that. You gotta keep the game looking smooth, right?

Also Cavalry was mainly used for scouting and riding to a location and dismounting. Seeing as today is the 152nd year Anniversary if Brandy Station I would love to see Cavalry in game.

Or in the case of Nathan Bedford Forrest at The Battle of Thompson's Station, cavalry can be used to cut a brigade of 2,000 men off from retreat and force their entire surrender :)

Goddamn Forrest was a freaking genius. Showed no fear and was brilliant at strategizing.

Just to highlight how much of a badass this guy was, I will post this little excerpt from Wikipedia ;)

" A month later, Forrest was back in action at the Battle of Shiloh (April 6 to April 7, 1862). He commanded a Confederate rear guard after the Union victory. In the battle of Fallen Timbers, he drove through the Union skirmish line. Not realizing that the rest of his men had halted their charge when reaching the full Union brigade, Forrest charged the brigade single-handedly, and soon found himself surrounded. He emptied his Colt Army revolvers into the swirling mass of Union soldiers and pulled out his saber, hacking and slashing. A Union infantryman fired a musket ball into Forrest's spine with a point-blank musket shot, nearly knocking him out of the saddle. Forrest grabbed an unsuspecting Union soldier, hauled him onto his horse to use as a shield, dumped the man once he had broken clear and was out of range, then galloped back to his incredulous troopers.[20] A surgeon removed the musket ball a week later, without anesthesia, which was unavailable. Forrest would likely have been given a generous dose of alcohol to muffle the pain of the surgery.[21] "

Forrest had 29 horses shot out from under him, wounded or killed at least 30 Union soldiers in hand-to-hand combat, and had been wounded 4 times.

Besides some of his accusations and post-war activities ( not getting into that ;) ) he seemed like a good leader and somewhat of a heroic character. Some cavalry leaders (assuming there will be cavalry in WoR) should aspire to lead like NBF. :D

That's only truly possible if you are Nathan Bedford Forrest, or you have Nathan Bedford Forrest on your side, lol!

Me too, definitely for scouting and officer's runners but also as mounted infantry for taking and holding key strategic areas early on in the game. Also if supply trains were a thing then cavalry could raid and loot from them.

Or I could pretend to be Nathan Bedford Forrest and empty three revolvers into a cluster of Union Troops... Oh man, thats going to be fun. If any of you yankees hear a single horse galloping and it starts to get closer, you might want to duck for cover ;)
