From Seven Pines to Sharpsburg and Chancellorsville to Spotsylvania, the Third Alabama Regiment played a key role in the Civil War. One of the first infantry units from the Deep South to make the journey to Virginia in 1861, the Third Alabama was the first to cross the Potomac into Maryland and to enter the streets of Gettysburg in 1863.

History

"For the young men of the Mobile Cadets, the heady excitement of the first months of 1861 must then have seemed like a dream come true. Here at last was the opportunity to make the fantasies of military glory a reality. The company had been formed in 1845, and then as now contained some of the finest youth from the wealthiest families of Mobile. Alabama. Since the early days, the cadets, while excelling at military drill and target practice, had been little more than a social club. Now, with the Federal evacuation of Fort Sumter, the possibility of war seemed very real. So real, in fact, that the captain of the cadets was waiting in the telegraph office following the news of the evacuation when the call for volunteers was received. A return message was immediately sent to the Alabama governor offering the services of the Mobile Cadets to the Confederacy. Within days, the cadets moved to Montgomery, where they were designated Company A, 3rd Regiment Alabama Infantry. The 3rd was the first Alabama command to leave the state for Virginia, where on May 4, 1861, at Lynchburg, they were mustered into Confederate service.

"The early uniform of the Mobile Cadets had been patterned after the undress uniform of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. Between the time the company was mustered into actual service and its movement to the seat of war, it had received more suitable attire consisting of cadet gray jackets with matching trousers and forage caps all trimmed in black. Probably while at Lynchburg, the cadets received M1841 Mississippi rifles with saber bayonets, which were shipped to that point from Alabama's Mount Vernon Arsenal. From Lynchburg. the 3rd Alabama was ordered to Norfolk, Virginia, where it remained until the city was evacuated on May 5. 1862. The Mobile Cadets found the action they had looked for in the Seven Days' battles before Richmond. At Seven Pines and Malvern Hill, the 3rd Alabama lost a total of 367 men killed and wounded. At Malvern Hill, the dead of the 3rd Alabama included two Mobile Cadets, both killed bearing the regimental colors."

South Mountain at Turner's Gap

South Mountain was a desperate battle for the gaps through the great mountain between Frederick and Boonsboro. The Third Alabama was on the extreme left of the Confederate line! Overlooking the road of Turner's Gap. Rodes mentions the following: "This little brigade 1200 muskets! Faced a Division of Hookers I Corps. And held them back for 4,5 hours!" Col. Cullen A. Battle "The third Alabama fought like tigers! Falling back and changing position seven times in the face of the overwhelming Federal Advance."

Sunken Road at Antietam / Sharpsburg

They came like a ocean billows to break on the rock of Gibraltar. Again they advanced to attack, but the Confederate Yell rang out, and the hurricane of war swept down in its fury. The sunken road at Waterloo found its parallel in the bloody land at Sharpsburg. It was D.H. Hill's Division, and the Third Alabama was in its centre. (Brig. Gen. Cullen Andrews)

Interesting unit, I enjoyed reading about them and it's nice to see a lesser known unit. I like the uniform, reminds me of the early war North Carolina uniform. Might have to try and put this kit together someday for reenacting you know, because I can't just have one... When you have good information about the uniform and weapons issued, that's something to appreciate, especially with Confederate units.

It is an amazing Company and has indeed a very nice neat uniform hoping to wear this uniform in this amazing game.
If you are interested in special uniforms might be worth to check out the 5th Georgia Company A(Not part of the Maryland Campaign) has a very nice green uniform other uniforms that are very interesting are from the 15th Alabama Company G(Sadly no photo but a description) and posted on the forum the 4th Georgia Infantry Company K with their dark blue uniform. And who knows how many other special uniforms that we will find reading all these history pieces and people making these companies.

Sad indeed that a lot of history seems to be lost and a lot of regiments and companies got put into the "lesser known" category

To clarify what our company is aiming to be:

We intend to create a role-play experience with military flavour (of course not going to the extremes) and are intending to play with one platoon light infantry and one platoon of regular infantry.
We are also in the Southern Independent Batallion and want to incorporate us fully into that institution. We want to establish an integrated leadership.

We are still in need of capable leaders, a Company Sergeant ("Spieß" for all the Germans here), who will be on administrative duties and my right hand, two lieutenants for the platoons and first sergeants for them.
Everyone interested in becoming an Officer or NCO will be trained and tested via a officer's test I have devised.

If you are interested, respond to this thread, send me a PM, volunteer at the company tool or add [3rdALA-ACoy]1stLt von Moltke on Steam.

We are looking forward to playing with you folks!

3rd Alabama had a lot of fun yesterday we played both Union and CSA servers where filled up pretty good.

side-note(not to start a discussion just how we experienced some things):

Too bad that some companies use only teamspeak or discord. You can use both if you set your sound settings correctly. That is what we do. So we can keep track of each other but still are able to communicate with the rest of the players.

Also do not agree with some larger companies think they automatically rule everybody. Not going to follow you just because you have a Colonel / Major /Captain in your name communicate with the players first. Especially if you do not know what a skirmish formation is and you like to charge just for the hell of it then we rather do our own thing even if we are one of the smaller companies at the moment.

EDIT: Only thing this guy did was complain, run a big mouth, never showed up to any of our drills or skirmish events. Now he is so mature as to call me rude. We run a very friendly group with people from over the world. We are looking for friendly guys to join our company and be part of a group effort. This is not a one man show we make the best game experience together!

So we are not looking for lazy guys that ask 100 times 'when do we have a event?' and then never show up.

Greetings,

From Seven Pines to Sharpsburg and Chancellorsville to Spotsylvania, the Third Alabama Regiment played a key role in the Civil War. One of the first infantry units from the Deep South to make the journey to Virginia in 1861, the Third Alabama Co. A was the first to cross the Potomac into Maryland and to enter the streets of Gettysburg in 1863.

We are a mixed unit EU(FR / GER/ BEL/ UK / NL) NA / ASIA (China)
Mixing fun with a role play aspect most important factor for us is teamwork. This is not a one-man show we will make use of the roles and ranks the time era held.

Friendly causual gamers are welcome. We are also looking for the American Civil War geeks who are motivated to help out and build this company with us.
We have still a lot of positions for NCO and Officer roles and ranks for those who are in love with the game and have the motivation and quality to take on these ranks.

Our 1st Lt is German and our NCO(Cpl.) 1st platoon is French. We do not care how messed up your English is or what kind of accent you have :-) As long as you want to be part of a tight group. We are active but we do not pressure anybody. Private life always comes first and we can understand some weekends you just want to dive into another game.

If this interests you then I hope to hear from you or see you volunteer with us.

Regards ,
HQ 3rd Alabama

Hello - I am 26 and from Denmark and id like to sign up for the regiment. I have prior experience with Warband:Napoleon playing line battles and being in 3 other regiments, both as straight line infantry, Dragoon in North&South Mod (Dismounted Cavalry) and skirmishing (Used to following orders). I heard about the regiment from Mr. Carter today while playing in a skrimish. - I like roleplaying and do liverole play IRL, so i got alot of experience with that. With that said i am a casual player so when not "in game" or in a battle don't expect me to be 100% serious all of the time. If you want to know more just ask me :) - Steamtag is = NoAlternative

Company News:

Yesterday 10/02 we had a drill with our company I regret not making more screenshots.

A new recruit from the UK joined our ranks Recruit Commissar IDOTS

We had some good battles after the drill, where like always communication helped us kick some yankee ass.

Special remarks:
Cpl/SC. Eazyred showed himself a excellent scout making sure our flanks where secure. He annoyed the enemy from a far with his sharpshooting skills

Sgt. Lebailec again showed himself a very excellent NCO in keeping the guys together and focused.

Pvt. Alabama / Pvt. Moon / Pvt. Steiner / Recruit Commissar IDOTS where our fighting force they stood in the main line and fought hard and with honor!

Thank you all for a very fun drill and fight together.

While at Lynchburg, the cadets received M1841 Mississippi rifles with saber bayonets, which were shipped to that point from Alabama's Mount Vernon Arsenal. From Lynchburg. the 3rd Alabama was ordered to Norfolk, Virginia, where it remained until the city was evacuated on May 5. 1862. The Mobile Cadets found the action they had looked for in the Seven Days' battles before Richmond. At Sewn Pines and Malvern Hill, the 3rd Alabama lost a total of 367 men killed and wounded. At Malvern Hill, the dead of the 3rd Alabama included two Mobile Cadets, both killed bearing the regimental colors."

In the Antietam Campaign:
In his report of the battles of Boonsboro and Sharpsburg, General Rodes wrote: "The men and officers behaved well, but Colonel Gordon's Sixth Alabama, Major Hobson's Fifth Alabama, and Colonel Battle's Third Alabama deserve special mention for admirable conduct during the whole fight.'' The Regiment was among those few defending Turner's Gap on South Mountain on September 14th, and in the fierce fighting in the Sunken Road during the midday of the 17th.

We are striving to provide a very friendly environment in our company. So whatever your level of experience is with games you are welcome here. We have mostly guys that are 25+ in age and have a few guys that are 60+. Now we will accept everybody that is 16+ in age as long as your mature minded and can role-play and act respectful on the drill camp and battlefield. We have people from over the world in our company EU / NA.

We need recruits - Corporals - Sgt's - Officers.

Promotion is a combination of time you are with us - the passion you have for the game (activity in-game and our steamgroup/ webpage) - the qualities you have to play a curtain role/rank. Not everyone can be promoted the majority we need are hard fighting soldiers.

Games we tend to play:

updated the main page.

We are looking forward to the Turner's Gap maps!

3rd Alabama at today's community event

brentcarter
03-13-2018, 07:29 AM
Greetings all,

We want to share a idea for a upcoming community event. And we hope to find both Confederate and Union companies interested to make this a reality.
The last community event was a lot of fun, a massive shootout between two massive forces.

The idea is to make 3 groups(companies) on each side, lets name them AB & C

A & B will act as line companies. A is the left flank B the Right.
C will be a group of skirmishers

I hope to see the use of messengers(runners) during the battles. So each side will have 3 appointed messengers to provide communication between the 3 groups. We hope the in-game chatbox or Teamspeak / Discord will not be used during this event.

So instead of 1 big mass we now have a lot more movement. The ability to try and flank each other.
Those who want to attend will be assigned to one of the 3 groups. I would think that the larger communities can fill up the A & B spots and the smaller group will be the Skirmishers.

Interested? Ideas? Please sent me a private message. We hope to make this a reality and the help from you all in this fine community.

Regards,

3rd Alabama Company A / 18th North Carolina Company A

Well plenty of events going during the weekend. But this event... We just planned this first one to see how that would work out. After hearing from all the companies I am sure we will plan more of these maybe once a month? Need to talk it over and maybe other companies are interested to join the next one.

Kompanie A der 3. Alabama sucht neue Soldaten!

Alabama's Involvement in the Civil War: A small Summary

- The first capital of the Confederate States of America was Montgomery, which served as the capital from February 4 to May 21, 1861.

- "The Stars and Bars," First National Confederate flag designed by Nicola Marschall, a Judson College professor. [This is not the better-known Confederate Battle Flag.]

Soldiers:

Between 90,000 and 100,000 men from Alabama served in the CSA army.

Military Leaders:

Gen. John H. Forney of Jacksonville, who was teaching at West Point in 1860, fought at First Manassas, and was captured at Vicksburg.

Gen. William Henry Forney of Jacksonville (brother of John) was captured at Gettysburg, released, fought again, and surrendered at Appomattox.

Gen. Henry D. Clayton of Eufaula and Opelika was involved with Gen. Bragg's army in Tennessee and Kentucky.

Gen. Joe Wheeler (born in Georgia and usually credited to that state, but lived in north Alabama). Fearless cavalry leader.

Heroes and Heroines:

John Pelham—fought with J. E. B. Stuart and Stonewall Jackson, artillery expert. Gen. Robert E. Lee referred to him as "the gallant Pelham." Was killed at age 24 at the battle of Kelly's Ford.

Emma Sansom—showed Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest a crossing at Black Creek on the road between Blountsville and Gadsden as Forrest chased a federal cavalry led by Col. A. D. Streight.

Adm. Raphael Semmes—a Confederate naval hero who sailed the CSS Alabama all over the world attacking U.S. merchant ships.

Supplies, cannons, ammunition: Gen. Josiah Gorgas of Pennsylvania (but married to Amelia Gayle, the daughter of Alabama Governor John Gayle) supported the South and became chief of ordnance for the Confederacy. Purchased some arms and munitions in Europe. Manufactured others at Selma. At the end of the war 10,000 people were employed in war industries at Selma. These industries were supplied by iron from north Alabama iron furnaces.

First submarine built in Mobile: The first two submarines sank; the third one was named the Hunley. Mobile Bay was too shallow for it to be used. It was taken to Charleston Harbor and on Feb. 17, 1864, the Hunley sank a warship, but never returned to port and was presumed to have sunk itself returning to shore.

Units involved in the Maryland Campaign
Infantry: 3rd / 4th / 5th / 6th / 8th / 9th / 10th / 11th / 12th / 13th / 14th / 15th / 26th / 44th / 47th / 48th / 5th Battalion
Artillery: Hardaway's / Jeff Davis

3rd AL is at the moment a Dominant European company we have a few Americans in our company and room for plenty more. For our NA based platoon we are looking for mature folk interested in the company history and to help build up and help lead this company. We have some very friendly guys mostly a bit older age and thus have family commitments and such. We are not the most active bunch(we are online Fridays and most Saturdays) neither the biggest (yet). We offer a friendly company in consideration of your private life. Only we ask of you to keep communicating. A bunch was removed for just not communicating at all. No place for ghosts in the company, a buys life is not a problem but to stop communicating is just rude and will not be accepted.

Besides enough space for people from the NA time zone, we gladly accept Europeans as we have a very mixed company that means we have language support for the German / France / Swedish / Dutch players out there.

This melody was written by Private J. Pressley of the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek and composed this tune to commemorate the sacrifices of his fellow soldiers. We were introduced to this song by banjo player, Howard Zane who learned it in 1948 from Bob Pressley, the son of the composer.

Last weekend we had two wonderful drills and skirmishes.
Big thanks to the 21st North Carolinian's for drilling with us.

We had some more true Alabamians volunteer with us! A bunch of guys from the UK , Germany and the Scandinavian part of the world.
Some young ones and some older ones. A mixed bag of good guys trying to set up a great company and battery with the Richmond Howitzers!

To one and all this fair Yuletide! Hail the blest morn!
As our guns are put to rest and weary feet allowed but a moment's repose, may we reflect upon a fruitful and enterprising year.
On behalf of the 8th Virginia Company 'H', I would beseech many warm blessings and a Merry Christmas upon both the Blue and Grey.

History

https://images.findagrave.com/photos250/photos/2002/268/11067_1033044474.jpg
