Stonewall Jackson's Second Corps

Jackson’s Second Corps is intended to provide an Administrative Framework
to coordinate and foster cooperation between Companies in the game War of Rights.
The Administrative Leadership works to unite the companies, teach and coordinate
while allowing company commanders to run their companies as they see fit ...
we can give overall goals and strategies but company commanders need the support and freedom they deserve to succeed.

II CORPS
The troops comprising the Second Corps originate known as the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac, under the command of Major General Gustavus W. Smith. This unit was also known as the Second Division and was eventually subsumed into general Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia as a reserve in Maj. Gen. D. H. Hill's Division. When Lee was able to reorganize his army after finishing battles with Union Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan on the peninsula, he created this corps under the command of Lieutenant General Jackson, along with a sister corps under Lt. Gen. James Longstreet. Lee's reorganization was based on his evaluation of the performance of his division commanders during the Seven Days Campaign.

LT-GEN THOMAS JONATHAN "STONEWALL" JACKSON:
(January 21, 1824 – May 10, 1863)
Jackson was born in what was then part of Virginia. He received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican–American War and distinguished himself at Chapultepec. From 1851 to 1863, he taught at the Virginia Military Institute, where he was unpopular with his students. During this time, he married twice. His first wife died, but his second, Mary Anna Morrison, outlived him by many years. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861 after the attack on Fort Sumter, Jackson followed it and joined the Confederate Army. He distinguished himself commanding a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run the following month, providing crucial reinforcements and beating back a fierce Union assault. It was there that Barnard Elliott Bee Jr., allegedly for Jackson's courage and tenacity, compared him to a "stone wall", which became his enduring nickname.

Jackson performed audaciously in 1862's campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley. Despite an initial defeat due largely to faulty intelligence, through swift and careful maneuvers Jackson was able to defeat three separate Union armies and prevent any of them from reinforcing the Army of the Potomac in its campaign against Richmond. Jackson then quickly moved his three divisions to reinforce General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in its defense of Richmond. His performance in the subsequent Seven Days Battles against George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac was poor, but did not cost the Confederacy the battles. During the Northern Virginia Campaign that summer, Jackson's troops captured and destroyed an important supply depot for General John Pope's Army of Virginia, and then withstood repeated assaults from Pope's troops at the Second Battle of Bull Run. Jackson's troops played a prominent role in September's Maryland Campaign, capturing the town of Harpers Ferry, an important strategic location, and providing an important defense of the Confederate Army's right flank at Antietam. At Fredericksburg in December, Jackson's corps buckled but ultimately beat back an assault by the Union Army under Major General Ambrose Burnside.

In May 1863, faced with a tremendous threat from the larger Union Army, now commanded by Joseph Hooker, Lee divided his force three ways. On May 2, Jackson took his 30,000 troops and launched a surprise attack against the Union right flank, driving the opposing troops back about two miles. That evening, he was accidentally shot by pickets. The general survived but lost his left arm to amputation; he died of complications from pneumonia eight days later. Military historians consider Jackson to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S. history.[3] His tactics are studied even today. His death was a severe setback for the Confederacy, affecting not only its military prospects, but also the morale of its army and of its general public. Jackson in death became an icon of Southern heroism and commitment. His daring military exploits, often while at a numerical disadvantage, play a prominent part in Confederate lore.

I was thinking the same Dether... the only thing I find strange about the OP is that he 'John' is displaying as a USA General of the Army, promoting & forming a CSA Corp!

John Cooley
10-23-2017, 01:09 PM
Yeah, I have asked but they do not intend to give the CSA a General of The Army forum icon.
Sadly, this means I have to either display my Contribution Level as USA
OR
appear to be less committed to the Game, by using the lower level Lieutenant General forum Icon ...
simply because I am CSA.

A. P. Hill

Except! , During the Maryland Campaign, which this community is based on, Corps were not legally recognized by the Confederate States political or military systems.

To effect the semblance of the Corps organization however, General Lee instituted what he called "Wings".

Corps in the Confederacy didn’t become a thing until after the Maryland Campaign, and during the move to Fredericksburg.

I recommend a renaming.

Good Luck.

John Cooley
10-23-2017, 01:33 PM
True.
Also ... Gen Lee, at the time, had no Lieutenant Generals. This wasn't done until after the reorganization of the army.
This occurred after the Peninsular Campaign, as noted in the Historical Information pull-down menu above.
However ...
The Community uses the rank for organizational hierarchy purposes, as well as, game contribution levels.

This organizational structure will come in handy when the game progresses beyond the Maryland Campaign and, just as we in the CSA do not plan to Lose the War "Historically" neither do we plan to strictly stick to organizational norms ... "Historically".

Mr. Cooley is correct the badge he and I wear only displays our contribution level. It has no bearing on our association to, or with the CSA. ;)

Of course the rank that we hold was also out of historical correctness, as the rank wasn't formed until after the Civil War.

Reasoning is simple ...
The numbers you quote are accurate and game launch is still way off.
Even if we do not add more Companies we will fill out to 800 soldiers.
The Corps framework allows us future room to expand and a framework of Infantry Brigades with attached Cav and Arty ...
a structure we like.

Naturally, we would love to create a non-historical independent corps but the same trolls who now berate us for forming too large of a unit were the same ones who chastised us for being an independent and non-historical brigade before.
The Haters will Hate and we will continue to play the game in a manner that brings us camaraderie and fun.

@ LaBelle ...
Thanks for the well wishes and ours go with you in your future endeavors.

I hear you....shame that, clearly some people have just too much time on their hands to worry about these things. Why I left the USA side and became a turncoat rebel in the first place. Now I'm CSA through and through. ;)

At most, Jackson was acknowledged, as a Division Commander, as was Longstreet. It was just that Lee saw their potential.

I'd recommend kicking this back to division command as it should be.

All CSA division commanders were Major Generals, again Lt. Generals and Corps were non existent historically at this time.

And as we all agree, this is about accurate history. ;)

And now I'm done.

I believe a division would also be a good point as well, My thoughts on the subject of Corps right now isn't good as i've only really seen A.P. Hill be able to hold a division together for a long amount of time, I'd like to say that the Ewells Division was doing pretty Ok and I'm sad to no longer see it.

One of the main things I think community members refuse to see in forming new organizations is that in the past year people have always been gung ho about creating something that was large. Although almost 90% fail in the first month and many of the remaining ones will die off soon following.

So, if you think you guys got what it takes, I say go for it

Good Luck and may the force be with you :D

In light of recent developments, the company command of the 6th Alabama (Company H), have conferred to hold vote. As a result of this vote, we have decided to withdraw the 6th AL from Stonewall's 2nd Corps. We would like to thank Cooley and Paioletti for their efforts in accomodating our entry into a Corps.

We wish the 2nd Corps the best in their future endeavours.

Morning.
This one ran a little too freely. This is not the first move towards a Corps-sized group and likely won't be the last. Mr Cooley is more than welcome to try his hand at the endeavour and should be allowed to do so in relative peace.
It must be considered healthy to both give and receive constructive criticism, it is part and parcel of engaging in discourse on a forum. Most here have gone beyond that point though, slinging mud at one another isn't very productive.

Thread cleaned up, on-topic responses only please and behave.
I am going to lock the thread for a short period of time, it will be unlocked again in an hour or so. Cool off...

Ewells Division was doing well. And this is the active part of Ewells Division branching off and trying to expand with active players. In roles the active players should have. We wish the others well and when they become active they are more then welcome to join us or do what ever they choose to do. In the end this is just a game and we are trying to create a group that will enjoy playing together and have fun doing so.

Keep a eye out for II- in game and you will see how we are doing. If you want to judge us do it on the battle field not in the forums. So get online have fun and see if we can help grow the game. And help test new game mechanics to insure they work as intended.

Gentlemen,
This thread was to simply post to say "Hey, multiple company's have came together and have formed a community. We have decided to call that community the 2nd Corps." To break that down for you people, we have formed a large club of active company's and are looking for more company's to join our club. Its that simple. People complain, and try to discourage new groups from forming based on historical accuracy. Well how about this, historically the Civil War was not fought behind keyboards so shut the hell up. In the end this is a game and as long as we are not being harmful or abusing the game NO ONE SHOULD HAVE A PROBLEM WITH WHAT WE CALL OUR COMMUNITY SIMPLE AS THAT!!! I hope to not offend people but sometimes enough is enough! We should be having fun and encouraging each other, not always trying to find a reason to bicker about something that does not effect your game play. Its unfortunate that the War of Right community cant stand with one another and work for progress. In saying this I wish all well and if anyone should need help I will be happy to offer it, its time for a change of unity in the War of Rights community !!! Good luck to all with there future endeavors may they be exactly as you imagine them to be!

Newspapers

During the civil war newspapers reported news from the battlefield and tackled some war related issues, having our own papers printed seems like a good way to express our views and comment on current events.

Disclaimer

[*=center]A 'old' look 'n feel will be used to create some immersion without losing means to be creative, so it's more like a modern newspapers based on Original newspapers from that day.
[*=center]Some of the correspondence will not be historical accurate as it depicts the game's community, we will however cover some historical facts/events.

This edition : hot air balloons or the so called 'spectator cam'

The spectator cam is something that once in a while is a hot topic (https://www.warofrightsforum.com/showthread.php?5103-Spetator-cam&highlight=cheating), some claim it's a cheat (https://www.warofrightsforum.com/showthread.php?4996-Free-camera-mode-for-cheating&highlight=spectator) * while others call it an gaming asset or a feature.

[*=center]There was an unfortunate instance in the distant past where the enemy deployed a balloon to spy (boys just love new toys :) ), one of our companies adopted this strategy to counter this advantage.
[*=center]Some even became slightly paranoid and started pointing fingers in all directions** even when the 'cam' isn't used and reports only come from scouts or visual sightings.
[*=center]Since then the community has grown and during events the usage (unless for recording) of balloons is strictly prohibited, spies will be shot at sight !

* Some could call the usage of the 'T' button to check behind trees/corners or the low graphic settings to see through corn also an exploit/cheat.

** For the Dunker's church map it's fairly easy for the CSA to counter the Federals as you can see almost as far as spawn and spot troop movement pretty fast.

This edition : sickness and disease during the civil war

Sickness and disease were the scourge of both armies and more men died of disease than in battle, of the 600.000+ casualties around 400.000 perished with sickness to the 200.000 who died of other causes.
Sanitation and hygiene was very poor and medical science was quite primitive by today's standards
Germs and the existence of bacteria had not yet been discovered, vaccination did exist in some forms but was still barbaric.
The usage of medication and painkillers was still in early stages and some of those are now considered "dangerous" or illegal or just bogus (wonder oils, miracle tonics) or wrongfully used.
Conditions in some POW camps where even worse, names like 'Andersonville' still echo through history.

Please be a little clearer about what you are asking ...
I can certainly spend a great deal of time explaining how our Corps Command Structure operates but I have neither the time nor desire to write such a long post.

II Corps is made up of quite a few Companies that vary greatly in size and Alpha Testing activity.
Some have almost everyone in Alpha while others, mine included, have little desire to deal with the constant Alpha problems and are waiting for a more stable BETA Test period.

I hope that answers your question, if that was the info you were looking for.

In rereading your post I should also add ...
We have 8 members of our Corps Administrative Command who communicate daily and meet every Sunday before Corps Drill.
We are split into Brigades, which in turn are split into Battalions, who have their own meetings and drill times.
Most of our Communications occur on Teamspeak and our Steam Group as it tends to be a friendlier place to post than this Forum.
Beyond that I am not sure what you mean by "Active".

Sir,

You have spoken to me 'in person' at length about the structure and the place of Companies within it, I was asking if the Corps as an organisation was still active as opposed to on hold (or at ease) over this, up until now, quiet period. I noted the last post, before I posted, was dated 28/8/2018. I was interested as to the current state of the group having drilled with it some months ago with a mind to transfer into it. I hoped that it was active and that it was in fact merely AWOL from the boards!

I hope too its answered your concerns about my request!

Ah, that makes perfect sense ... Thank you.
Yes our Forum Activity has been greatly curtailed.
There are multiple reasons for this but rest assured II- is still the largest and most active unit in WoR and we plan to remain so.
Most recruiting is now conducted in-game and I am not sure many of us still use these Threads to do much more than welcome new Recruits and post Historical information.
We have a select few who check these threads daily (I do multiple times daily) and any relevant info is posted in our Steam group for the Corps Members to see.

Perhaps BETA will change these dynamics but presently we are focusing on game play and you can always find some of us at every event ... most of which we run.

Any unit that wishes to check things out before joining can contact anyone of rank above Major to get the proper permissions for the Teamspeak and Steam.
There is a probationary period in which both the Prospecting Unit and II- Staff can work together and see if it is the right fit for both parties.
This is borne from having been burned in the past by "poser" units whose sole goal was to disrupt the Corps and it is intended to protect the Prospecting Company just as much as II Corps.

While we made a great many changes to"How" we run business be assured that we DO conduct business and we are very easy to reach, at any level of the Chain of Command.
Feel free to continue asking questions because, even though text can be easily misconstrued and meanings unintentionally inferred, it is currently the best First Step to joining a great group of guys who plan to continue dominating the battlefield for years to come.

Placing this here because I couldn't find a 3rd Arkansas Company H forum post. This is directed at the 3rdAR(H) staff:

Just wanted to swing by and say you guys have an amazing Sergeant, Sgt. Capitalist. This evening when all we had was some randos and some of my guys, he stepped up where others wouldn't, and worked hard to organize the group and lead them right. I can only imagine how stressful and frustrating it was for him dealing with both us and the pubbies on his team, but who wouldn't be stressed trying to herd cats round after round? xD He's a keeper, and I know you guys will let him shine.

Some strive for Quantity while others Quality ...

To one and all this fair Yuletide! Hail the blest morn!
As our guns are put to rest and weary feet allowed but a moment's repose, may we reflect upon a fruitful and enterprising year.
On behalf of the 8th Virginia Company 'H', I would beseech many warm blessings and a Merry Christmas upon both the Blue and Grey.
