I'll be there for sure July 2nd and 3rd. https://www.nps.gov/gett/planyourvisit/battle-anniversary.htm Probably the 6th, 7th, and 8th as well to an extent. I'll go to at least one of those reenactment days. Not sure yet. My understanding is the reenactments might be worth going to on the five year anniversaries. The off-years are kind of meh from the one I saw.

The most famous engagement of the University Greys was at Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg, when the Confederates made a desperate frontal assault on the Union entrenchments atop Cemetery Ridge. The Greys penetrated further into the Union position than any other unit, but at the terrible cost of sustaining 100% casualties—every soldier was either killed or wounded. Well looks like your unit will all not make it off the field .

When you guys are there tell all the reenactment guys to get war of rights, that's the type of players we need- civil war enthusiasts

I think the anniversary and reenactment is a great opportunity to meet and plot to impose our will on the community.

I work as the park's veteran outreach, not that I can get anyone in for free (unless maybe if you're a vet). But I know the area well and have a pretty good idea of the various things that'll be going on for the anniversary week. Like I said I'll only be there July 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and probably 8th now. Here's to hoping there's no rain.

It's going to be hot as hell as it always is that time of year in Gettysburg. I remember at the 150th it was close to 95 one day. I purchased some ice prior to a battle and stuffed it into my kepi until it stuck over the crown of my head about 6 inches but man did it feel good... lol.

I just came back yesterday, it was really great, my first Gettysburg so far. I was with the 71stPA, I was positioned right next to the smaller cannon, to the left side of it behind the rocks cover on Sunday's battle.

Why?

Because after 155 years the CSA still loses the fight?

:D

Na it is just poorly coordinated, run, and organized. Reenactor cars/trucks in plain view of spectators, camp sites barely had anyone with half shelters/dog tents since everyone brought A frames. Farb carnival including bagpipers, sun glasses, women soldiers wearing makeup, and not putting up their long hair or having it in a pony tail instead. Oh and made us wear wrist bands plain in view on you to show that you registered.... For the battles themselves they lasted like 45 minutes each segment, everyone dies or is captured in Pickett's charge, rolling thunder..., one battle was out of view of spectators, the giant megaphones were in the way of the battle, they used siege mortars during the fights, had artillery in stupid places that if they really fired would hit the hill side. There is more to it, but that's just what I picked up. GAC is just in it for the money (especially since they have the reenactors PAY to reenact)

And then people want to know why I don't attend or go to these things. :)

But, there was a time.

I'm too old for all that now.

I went and it was very poorly organized by the GAC.

Reenacting as a whole has been going down hill for several years. I remember the 140th Manassas being an absolute disaster. Most of the event coordinators have no idea how to organize these things.

I was spectating. I was very annoyed by the times being wrong on their website. I ended up missing stuff I wanted to see since I wasn't interested in spending all day there. The only reason I caught any of Picket's Charge was because I arrived early to get a good seat.

I had a front row seat kneeling at the center of the stone wall right next to the Union colors. :D

a friend of mine caught my likeness as I marched past on the Sunday. Pickett's Charge was very....anticlimactic.
It was my first Gettysburg reenactment. I had fun, but mostly because of enjoying being with my company. The battles....so-so.
Looking forward to doing some more authentic events....I still love it.
