Great resource here, actually printed in Vicksburg where I've spent so much of my semester doing research (actually in Mississippi right now). Clarke was a printer for the Daily Whig, I think? The name is familiar but I don't have my notes with me at the moment.

Being an almanac, I'm surprised at how many pages were devoted to making a defense of slavery (beginning with a biblical defense at around pg. 125).

edit: I realize now why I remembered his Hugh C. Clarke's name in a Vicksburg Daily Whig, he was an advertiser in that paper.

The population numbers in "whites" & "slaves" & growth from 1850 - 1860 is also very interesting (page 30-32).

Seems when you become an officer .. the pay rises exponential :)
