    Question Reenactors and their ranks

So I've been looking into reenactment so civil war of course. I can't get a clear answere on this maybe some one here who does it can tell me. What determines the rank you hold as a reenactor if you don't portray a historical person like say you wanted to be a 1st LT how would you go about getting that rank as a reenactor?

My company holds a vote every three years to decide on which ranks will be distributed around. So you could be a Captain for three years and then a private for three years.

Buy the kit then shout the loudest.... Thats normally works in living history circles Or 'found' a regiment/battalion/division.

As for being a 1st Lt. Too many chiefs as it stands in all reenacting eras.

Being with the Indians is where it's REALLY at.

I cannot disagree with this. Privates have much more fun because there are far fewer responsibilities. Groups I've been in have either held yearly elections, or the Colonel decides (Hatchmo and I are/were in the same organization.)

I just joined reenacting this year, but as I can tell you always join as a Private, except few rare cases, of course each regiment is different. I think higher ranks like Captain + probably decided by voting, below usually as you advance in ranks, how well you do battle, how disciplined you are, how fast you get into formations, etc. I saw a newbie 2nd Lt leading a company at my local reenactment last month and it wasn't that good for him I think lol but he got used to it though, but most officers will be capable of leading at first time.

Then that's just like it was at the beginning of the war. Nobody had a clue what was going on. Ha
