    My ancestor, whom I have named myself after in this game, Alexander Sloan Townes (Hampton Legion (SC) F Company) wrote home to his little sister after the Battle of First Manassas - while his unit was guarding the Occoquan River from Camp Bacon Race.
    "I am glad that you are learning the song, “Let me kiss him for his mother”. Some of the Washington Light Infantry sing o’ nights very beautifully, “Kitty Clyde”. Please learn that and if I get home soon I will try and sing it with you."
    Alexander survived the War, died in 1909, but I do not know if he and his sister ever sang those songs together.

    After the brave 52nd New York unfolded its regimental flag for the first time for a drill today it is my need to share with you this piece of good Denglish folklore. The Companies H, I and K together were the "Sigel Rifles" of the 52nd New York State Volunteer Infantry.

    I goes to fight mit Sigel

    I comes shust now to tells you how,
    I goes mit regimentals,
    To schlauch dem voes of Liberty,
    Like dem old Continentals,
    Vot fights mit England long ago,
    To save dat Yankee Eagle;
    Und now I gets mine sojer clothes;
    Und I goes to fight mit Sigel.

    Yaw, daus is true, I shpeaks mit you,
    I goes to fight mit Sigel.

    Ven I come from de Old Countree,
    Somedimes I works at baking;
    Den I keeps a lager beer saloon,
    Und den I goes shoe-making;
    But now I was a sojer been
    To save dat Yankee Eagle,
    Und give dem Rebel vellers fits.
    I goes to fight mit Sigel.

    I gets ein tam big rifle gun,
    Und puts him on mine shoulder,
    Den I strouts around like a big jackhorse,
    Or may been someding bolder;
    I goes off mit de volunteers
    To save dat Yankee Eagle;
    Und schlauch dem dam secession volks,
    I goes to fight mit Sigel.

    For rations dey gives salty pork,
    I dink dat was a great sell;
    I petter likes de saurkraut,
    Der Schvitzer-kaise und bretzel.
    If fighting Joe will give us dem,
    Ve'll save dat Yankee Eagle,
    Und I'll put mine frau in breech-a-loons,
    To go and fight mit Sigel.

    Die Deutschen men mit Sigel's band
    At fighting have no rival;
    Und ven Cheff Davis mens ve meet,
    Ve schlauch dem like de tuyvil.
    Dere's only von ting vot I fear,
    Ven pattling for de Eagle,
    We vont get not no lager beer,
    Ven we goes to fight mit Sigel.
