For those of you living in the "Area"

The Civil War Trust has started a new program going on 2 years now called "Generations". It is intended to get youngsters (and some adults,) interested in the happenings of the American Civil War. The host events that allow the attendees to become involved in history.

The following was in my email of today, giving a schedule for the next two events to take place in September. So if you're in the area, and you have time, you might find attending interesting.

Two years ago, the Civil War Trust launched its Generations program in recognition of the need to engage and immerse young people in our nation's history. We’ve walked Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, charged the West Woods at Antietam, stood like Stonewall Jackson at Manassas, lived like soldiers at Petersburg, and engaged kids at several other events as well. Collectively, we’ve done this together, sharing our own passion for the subject with thousands of kids, grandkids, neighbors and friends.

And we have two new Generations events coming up in September, at Gettysburg and Brandy Station—both free of charge! At Gettysburg, we will “Walk in the Footsteps of Heroes” on Saturday, September 2. We’ll stand like the soldiers of the Iron Brigade, reenact some of the battle movements, and march to Lee’s Headquarters, on the very ground where thousands of soldiers did the same! Register for the Gettysburg event here.

We are also very pleased to announce a brand-new event for Saturday, September 30: “Cavalry Charge at Brandy Station!” For the first time since the Battle of Brandy Station, we’ll stand just yards away as Union and Confederate cavalrymen pound up and down Fleetwood Hill, with flags waving and sabers slashing! Get up close with the horses as you maneuver in line of battle, learn to use your saber and find out how to respond to bugle calls. Register for the Brandy Station event here.

We hope you can join us and help instill a lifelong passion for history by bringing your son, daughter, niece, nephew, neighbor or friend as we walk in the footsteps (and hoof-steps!) of Civil War soldiers. Some lucky kids will get to don the uniforms of their choice and see the battlefield astride a horse! Both events are free to anyone who brings a young person, but registration is required.

    Hope to see you there,
    Garry Adelman,
    Director of History and Education

P.S. Watch this quick video to find out more about our Generations events.
Hope some of ya'll get to attend.

Awesome! The Battle of Brandy Station (Culpeper, VA) was the first reenactment that I attended, I must have been 12, probably 1983!
