You've inspired me to attempt this myself.... Im a graphic designer by trade and have always enjoyed taking on new challenges. Can you give me any advice for a portrait novice. I assume you use either Illustrator/PS or both, was their any tutorials that you found helpful when you started out on this road?

can i get one oh these ?
This is a very broad question to put forward. Illustrator is rather useless for drawing or painting, I use Photoshop, however it doesn't really matter what program you're painting in, I know people like Sai and Krita (this one is free), and they are all similar enough for most things to be applicable cross platform. The important fundamentals: colour and light, anatomy, composition have little to do with software, and I suggest getting a good textbook, like Bammes or Hampton for anatomy, James Gurney's "Color & Light" for, no surprise here, colour and light, Loomis' "Creative illustration" for composition, but it covers colour and light well too. Most tutorials you find on the internet often don't go into enough depth or provide with good continuity to learn efficiently.
