    Original Union Flags

This thread is for posting original Union Flags that one finds. We would appreciate it if one would post what unit the flag belongs to. When an original can not be found a reproduction may be used so we can get an idea of what it looks like

    Battle torn 72nd PVI Flag

Original 69th PVI Flag that was carried during the battle of Gettysburg was also torn to pieces by 69th when they got completely surrounded during pickets charge.\
This flag was carried from 1861-1863 by the 69th

Post Gettysburg 1863 69th PVI Flag

Reproduction 69th PVI green flag. NOTE THE 69th PVI were the only regiment in the whole state if Pennsylvania to carry a green flag. The original no longer exists

    151st PV, a 9 month regiment

It's only serious action was Gettysburg where it was called up on July 1st to fill a whole between the Bucktail brigade and the Iron Brigade, it ended up acting as a rear guard instead. According to it's commander nearly all the regiments losses were in this action relieving the Iron Brigade. Their enlistments expired three weeks later and the regiment was mustered out.

Couldn't get a picture without glare.

On October 30, 1861, May Matthews, representing the “ladies of Brooklyn,” presented this custom made regimental color to the 52nd New York Volunteer Infantry in a public ceremony overlooking New York’s harbor. Colonel Paul Frank received the flag and delivered a rousing acceptance speech, in German, to his regiment and the sympathetic crowd. The flag, as originally constructed, included three fabric layers- two outer silk pieces, each made from a single piece of silk, supported by a cotton lining. One outer silk piece, seen here, features Liberty atop an eagle with the Constitution in one hand and a national flag in the other, all embroidered, with embroidered battle honors and oak leaves. The other outer silk layer includes embroidered battle honors, an oak wreath, and inscriptions including Colonel Frank's name, regiment identification, and nickname, "Sigels Rifles."

Battle honors from top left: Gaines Mill, Peach Orchard, Savage Station, Antietam, Malvern Hill, White Oak Swamp, Fair Oaks, Fredricksburg

P.S. dearest Devs: There are some savage Germans in this Community who dream of the day of implementation of "their" flag with tears in their eyes.

    Ohh the Private was faster.

An interesting fact is that the ladies who made the flag of the 52nd also made the flag of the 20th New York also a German Regiment and our brothers in the German Volunteers.
