Please Help These Men Have Names

Mr. John Banks on his blog posted several images of Confederate graves that was taken in Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond in 1865.

    BLOG LINK-----> http://john-banks.blogspot.com/2015/...-of-seven.html

These pictures were blown up to the point that some of the names on the wooden markers can be read.

Over time these markers rotted away and where replaced with small stone blocks that only have numbers on them.

    For example: "311865"

No names, no dates; nothing just numbers.

    The men's names are:

Private William H. Ambrose, 35th North Carolina: A 21-year-old farmer from Onslow County, North Carolina, he enlisted on Sept. 6, 1861. Wounded at Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862, Ambrose was transported that day to Richmond, where he died 11 days later.

Boldin or Bowlen M. Ferrell, 35th Georgia private: A musician, he was from Campbell County, Ga., and enlisted on Oct. 31, 1861. He died of disease in a Richmond hospital on July 18, 1862.

E.W. Martin, 19th Mississippi: Possibly Private Enoch W. Martin, Company I, who enlisted on May 1, 1861.

    W. Kelley, 1st Louisiana: Possibly Sergeant William Kelley, who enlisted on May 15, 1861. ]

The other men I am looking for records for.

    N.F. James, 35th Georgia

    J.S. Harvey, 1st South Carolina

    J.W. Champion, 14th South Carolina

My goal is to find the exact location in the cemetery that this photo was taken so that it can be matched up with the terrain so these men can get headstones with their names on them.

But the problem besides finding the location is this is the cemetery today.

Each one of those blocks represent three men...

Please see what can be done for these seven men.

Excellent website and I wish you all the luck in the world to get each soldier a named headstone.

On a side note I find it disgusting and disrepectful of what is happening .with the tearing down of monuments (yeah it made big news even over the pond here, so much so there was protests to get Admeral Nelsons (Nelsons Coloum) monument torn down)

While I do not agree with why the confederacy went to war...I do accept that it is a part of our nation's history and do respect them as veterans of that era. It is a shame what is being done to the memory of these men who were doing what they believed to be right in their hearts.

I wish you the best of luck!

Yes it is disgusting some folks even compare them to Nazis.

Can you make out any other names in the photo? I saw a "H. L. Harwood".

    Full photo.

Lots of unknowns could be identified from this single image.

I have figured out where in Oakwood that these men are buried.

    Oakwood Cemetery #12, Row R, Division C.

Now I just need someone to go out there with a copy of this photo and match it up with the land.

These men may soon have the headstones and the honor that they rightly deserve.

Also I am going to call the Commander of the Lee-Jackson SCV Camp in Richmond to see if he could send someone out to Oakwood for Private J. W. Champion 14th South Carolina Co. K who is buried in grave #11 in Row "R" in "Division" "C".
