New Civil War game Grand Tactician:Civil War

    Hello Grand Tacticians!

Release Date set to Summer 2020!

When we started the work on Grand Tactician, in late 2016, we had quite a clear view of what kind of a game we’d like to create. Busy development has been underway ever since. Though not everything has gone according to plan.

Actually, we’ve been fortunate enough to run into great, generous and creative people, with whom we’ve had the pleasure to work with, to further improve our game.

For example, when we started the audiovisual aspects of the game were much more humble. But with brilliant efforts from the artists we work with, and of course our own Peter, who joined the team on the move, we’ve been able to add a lot to the game, from original soundtrack to the beautiful colorized commander images, historic style drawn maps and campaign videos, which we did not dare to dream of when starting the project.

We’ve also received a lot of positive feedback from our followers, including some really interesting ideas for game play. We’ve already been adding some of this into the game.

But unfortunately, as a small team of independent developers with day jobs, all this means some more development time is needed. We want to make things properly, so instead of cutting content and rushing production, we’ve decided to push the originally planned release date of late 2019 a bit further, to summer 2020. This will allow us to deliver good quality and balanced game play without risking another unfinished early access title.

Though, for the eagerly awaiting future Grand Tacticians the situation could be as nerve wrecking as waiting for McClellan to move was for mr. Lincoln, we feel the wait will be worth the unfortunate disappointment, as the other option has 2nd Bull Run written all over it. At this point we’ve locked all the features, so it’s easier to estimate the remaining development time. And we’ve also stored a good bunch of ideas for free post-release implementation!

So one more season in winter quarters, and then prepare to move through the gap!

We will continue spilling the beans as we progress, like before. And we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our followers for the great support given to our humble project of passion!

And as before, we will keep you updated on the development progress via our Developer's Blog. With 2019 drawing to end, we are planning on releasing more information about the campaign game play, as well as first campaign footage from the game.

General, thank You for supporting Grand Tactician!

    I am, sir, Your very ob't se'v't,

    O. KEPPELMÜLLER, Gen'l. Engineer Corps.

Looks interesting, but I hope the Confederate Battle Flag is just a placeholder for First Manassas
To bad that the trailer has just a tiny part of ingame footage.

I'm not sold. In fact, I feel more inclined towards scepticism now given how short actual gameplay was in the trailer.

It looks like a remake of Ultimate General: Civil War.

When someone claim that "Napoleonic tactics" was used during the civil war, they are just showing that they never actually study the tactics used during the two wars... They have very little to do with each other.

And if game designers get this wrong... I have no high hopes for the game.

    What tactics were used?

The difference between this and UGCW is that here the player can actually make a difference. That and there's a complex Hegemony-esque campaign map.

Napoleon used a "combined arms" style of tactical fighting where infantry, cavalry and artillery had their distinct parts to play in the battle. The Civil War only used the infantry part of those tactics. Partially due to technology, the rifle forced the artillery to keep its distance so it could not play its "Napoleonic" role of offensive operations. The cavalry also was affected by the rifle but its transformation into a recon/raider role or mounted infantry mostly reflected their training level and the lack of open terrain typical of Europe. The infantry continued to fight in line like "Napoleonic" but not quite. They had to stay together mostly because of the need to communicate and control the formations. But they tended to fight in a much "looser" formation than the Napoleonic 2, 3 and 4 line battalions. This also partially due to the terrain in America and the rifle.

You will see almost no "grand" cavalry charges in the CW. Or any "grand batteries" being formed at close range to infantry to break their lines up. Cavalry if it engages infantry will almost always do so dismounted and fighting as infantry. Artillery will almost always be providing either long range support or defensive fire in close support of infantry. Other than early in the war before the "Green" troops learned better you will seldom read of infantry "standing" in the open when not actively attacking. They will be prone or behind some cover.
