    MARYLAND CAMPAIGN HISTORY

With the IX Corps now apart of the Army of the Potomac, General George McClellan placed General Ambrose Burnside in charge of the Right wing of the Army of the Potomac which consisted of the I Corps under General Joseph Hooker, and his own IX Corps now under the command of General Jesse Reno. The Kanawha Division under General Jacob Cox would be attached for the campaign. The IX Corps would fight in the Battle of South Mountain in the Fox's Gap and General Reno would be killed in action leaving General Cox in charge of the IX Corps for the remainder of the Maryland Campaign. During Antietam the I and IX Corps would happen to be on opposite sides of the Battlefield which left Burnside back in charge of the IX Corps. By 10am the IX Corps to the far south of the field would attack the bridge later dubbed "Burnside's Bridge" as well as cross over Snaverly Ford. After securing both river crossings the IX Corps would advance toward the Harpers Ferry Road nearly cutting the Confederate Army's retreat path. However, a Confederate counter attack would drive the IX Corps back to the Antietam creek bringing an end to the Battle of Antietam. The entire IX Corps would be on reserve during the Battle of Shepherdstown.

Nice thread and good luck! You don't hear much about 9th Corps so I'm looking forward to reading more of their history.
