Okay, so I know the WoR devs are a long way from even thinking about the next campaign, as they're focusing on making the Maryland Campaign detailed and great, but I just wanted to get other people's opinions on what they would like to see in the future of WoR for future campaigns. Here's my picks:
Northern Virginia Campaign: Late Summer, 1862
Covers battles such as Second Manassas (which was basically the prologue to Antietam), Chantilly, and Thoroughfare Gap. I feel like this one would be the "easiest" (I say that knowing full well how much effort goes into making these maps) campaign to make. It would probably be the easiest since the Northern Virginia Campaign took place right before the Maryland Campaign, so much of the uniforms, equipment, regiments, etc. would be the same as in the Maryland Campaign.
Notable Campaign Engagements:
Cedar Mountain (Slaughter's Mountain): August 9, 1862
1st Rappahannock Station (Waterloo Bridge): August 22-25, 1862
Manassas Station Operations (Bristoe Station): August 25-27, 1862
Thoroughfare Gap: August 28, 1862
Second Bull Run (Second Manassas): August 28-30, 1862
Chantilly (Ox Hill): September 1, 1862
Manassas Campaign: Summer, 1861
I personally think the Manassas Campaign would be an intriguing campaign for WoR. For one thing, it would be a whole different treatment of the game with early war weaponry, equipment, and uniforms. It would also be a great starting point for any companies and regiments following a sort of timeline of events. In terms of maps, a Manassas Campaign would be much smaller, as the only true large-scale battle of this campaign was the First Battle of Bull Run, AKA First Manassas. However, the devs could also add maps from other battles in the 1861 Eastern Theater such as Ball's Bluff and Dranesville. Ball's Bluff would be an awesome map to play on as Union, as you would have to cross the Potomac on boats and try to establish a foothold on the bluff. Dranesville would also be cool because it was a winter battle, and would be interesting for winter combat scenarios.
Notable Campaign Engagements:
Blackburn's Ford: July 18, 1861
First Bull Run (First Manassas): July 21, 1861
Other 1861 Engagements:
Ball's Bluff (Leesburg): October 21, 1861
Dranesville: December 20, 1861
First Western Campaign: Late Winter / Early Spring, 1862
Okay, so it wasn't actually called the "First Western Campaign" but that's what I call it since naming a WoR campaign as "Federal Penetration up the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers" is a bit wordy, don't you think? Anyway, this campaign would focus on the major engagements of the Western Theater in early 1862, most notably Fort Donelson and Shiloh. This would be a great campaign to explore, as not only could it allow for winter operations and sieges against Forts Henry and Donelson, but also have the intense woodland combat at Shiloh. Another great experimental feature that could be implemented (it would take a lot of time, but it would be a really neat feature) is naval gunboats. This campaign featured a lot of gunboat action along the rivers, and it would be cool to get naval support from gunboats at Shiloh. The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle of the war until Antietam, and could be seen as the Western Theater's equivalent of Antietam.
Notable Campaign Engagements:
Fort Henry: February 6, 1862
Fort Donelson: February 11-16, 1862
Shiloh (Pittsburg Landing): April 6-7, 1862
Corinth: April 29 - May 30, 1862
So these are my top three picks for future campaigns in WoR. Like I said at the top, I know they're a long way off from adding new campaigns, but I'd love to just start a discussion on what other people think would be cool campaigns. Thanks.
