    edit: I realize now why I remembered his Hugh C. Clarke's name in a Vicksburg Daily Whig, he was an advertiser in that paper.
    The population numbers in "whites" & "slaves" & growth from 1850 - 1860 is also very interesting (page 30-32).

    Seems when you become an officer .. the pay rises exponential
