Thread: Need the Option to Furl the Colours

Need the Option to Furl the Colours

It is not historically accurate to believe that civil war Regiments would have had their colours unfurled when they wanted to keep their position unknown to the enemy. When engaged in combat the colours do provide inspiration to the men but when moving through woods or other concealment it would be foolhardy to have the colours unfurled. Since War of Rights strives for historical accuracy I believe a mechanic to furl the colours needs to be implemented.

As a regimental color-bearer, I'd definitely appreciate this as, along with the historical bonuses, it would be nice not to have a constant sound in my ear of: "SWOOSH WOOOOSH"

    Thanks for the suggestion.

If we ever implement such a feature, furling the colours will of course stop any kind of spawn ability on the flag.

Liking this for historical purposes, and it would be great to give the flagbearer something to mind as an extra. However the unfurled flag -is- a major aim point for the enemy, so I would not want such a mechanic misused by being able to put your furled flag -just- inside the woods behind the firing line as to take away that bigger aim perceivement.

Like Trusty said furling the flag would disable respawning on it so that should allievate that concern.

It would certainly be nice to not have a massive beacon over your unit alerting enemy troops everywhere you go! Would be interested to see how things play out differently if this gets implemented someday.

Nothing says you have to have the flag at your lines though or visible to the enemy. As far as pure competition it's almost asinine to do so and that's an unfortunate state we're at right now.

IMO the flag bearer concept needs an overhaul because it isn't filling its historical role by anyone's measurement. The spawning is nice, and I'm definitely not against spawning, but there's an urgency to field operations involved with the present implementation of the flag bearer because it's now a critical asset which cannot keep getting killed over and over if you're going to have a chance. Flags need protection ("flag bearer stay in the rear"). It should be a desired presence for a team striving to take or hold territory front and center of their lines. Flags should quite literally serve as a beacon of attack / defense as they did in real life. To do that they can't be mobile spawn when respawning is above-and-beyond top necessity that determines outcomes in FPS games far and wide.

That isn't something that's going to be achieved with the present state of affairs. It should be that planting it farther forward and in a position to more dominate an objective helps with the mission progress at all stages of the fight, moreso within larger formations. Keeping it there longer and within supporting distance of larger formations should be important as well but the flag should be a significant boost. If an attacking team fails to get its flags even close to the objective then you should have time penalties. The end result should be the desire for both teams to keep the flags in formations as far towards the enemy as possible.

The spawning should be delegated from the flags to the formations themselves in some manner and in a way that does not depend on the moment-to-moment survival of any single player within the formation. Furling would make much more sense for a formation who is not actively supporting or attacking an objective at that moment if the role served another role than spawning. It's too critical as a spawn point, especially when you can just hide it in many cases with a small color guard.

that's why units had and still have color guards so that the unit might detach the colors in order to have a stationary rally point not in the middle of all the fighting of hand to hand combat

Physical stamina and unflinching courage were requisite qualities of a good color-bearer. One former soldier described another vital attribute: “I resolved my very best to be a leader—for a good color-bearer must at times be that regardless of personal consequences.”

that his flag, were the sole responsibility of the color guard, which usually ranged in size from two to nine men. Like the bearer, these soldiers were chosen for their bravery and steadiness. If the color-sergeant was shot down, a member of his escort immediately picked up the standard. Since flags were the focal point of 19th-century combat, the casualty rate of the color party and the companies in the closest proximity to it was often extremely high.

Because of a stand of colors’ vital function and its emotional appeal, losing one was considered a terrible disgrace. As a result, Civil War soldiers often resorted to drastic measures to save their flags from being seized, exposing themselves to great risk of death, injury or capture.

The focus of this post is to add an option to furl and unfurl the colurs. I'm not debating the purpose of colour bearers or a colour guard.
