    1st U.S. Artillery, Randol's Battery

    About our Battery

As the 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment our first and foremost role is to destroy, defeat, or disrupt the enemy with fire whether it be against infantry or in an artillery duel against an enemy battery. We do plan to have Drill at least once a week(only teaching what we expect to do in the field/what works best for the game) which will emphasize accuracy, speed and efficiency for our crews.

In events, there will be times we wont always man the guns, we realize other batteries should get a turn and have some fun. In which case we are prepared to fight as Skirmishers with the intention to harass the enemy with flanking fire, or as a screening/ reconnaissance force. Sometimes we will also deploy as a "Guard" for the friendly Battery, whatever the situation dictates for us to be effective as a unit and for our team.

Our foundation will be built as a mature-minded group with a solid atmosphere based on teamwork. We intend to offer a perfect blend of realism and fun within the unit. Well structured and organized, yet relaxed and in it for the good times. More importantly we understand it is a game and life is first.

We encourage anyone to join if they have an interest in Union Artillery, our members are comprised of current/prior Military, gamers, hobbyists, history lovers. Most of us are NA but we welcome anyone across the globe. If you want a great experience with a community of friends then look below and join our discord! History of the Regiment and Battery G

The 1st Regiment U.S. Artillery was formed June 1, 1821. Stonewall Jackson saw service with the Regiment during the Mexican War.

On the 12th of April, 1861, a First Artillery garrison opened the war, and on the 9th of April, 1865, a battery of the regiment fired the last cannon-shot at the principal army of the Confederacy and almost the last shot of the war.

Two batteries, one of the First and one of the Fifth, were in the very vortex and crisis of the battle of Bull Run; a battery of the First was in action nearly all day not far from "Deadman's Lane" at Antietam; in the line of thirty pieces which finally checked the victorious Confederates on our right at Chancellorsville were six belonging to the First; the "Crest of the Rebellion" at Gettysburg found two batteries of the First in the line against which it broke; when the last obstacle to the free navigation of the Mississippi was overcome at Port Hudson, three batteries of the First Artillery could claim their fair share of credit for the achievement; and when Early was sent "whirling through Winchester" two batteries of the First were there to assist him along.

Captain Alanson Randol, commander, 1st U.S. Artillery, Batteries E & G, third from left.
At the beginning of the Gettysburg Campaign, Batteries E & G (now reorganized as units of the highly-mobile Second Brigade, U.S. Horse Artillery, rearmed with four 3-inch Ordnance rifles) were part of Brigadier General David M. Gregg's mission to locate Robert E. Lee's Confederate forces which had disappeared from Fredericksburg.
On the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Randol's batteries engaged Confederate cavalry trying to flank the Union right. Here he was breveted to the rank of major for bravery and "gallant and meritorious service".

The battery is honored by two monuments on the East Cavalry Field at Gettysburg.
