It's not that nice for the rear rank when playing in double ranks, that they need to make a big step to the right and at the shoulder arms to the left to shot between the gaps. It's is annoying, especially after when you played over 1000 hours as an enlisted man because always someone forget it, it doesn't look nice, cost time (particularly with a big line),...
My idea for that would be the ability to make a (half)-step to the right, e.g. with the E key. It's mentioned in Casyes School of Company(1862),
