Five Years of the 52nd New York Infantry "German Rangers" in War of Rights

The 52nd NY takes pride in celebrating its fifth jubilee in the Game War of Rights. It was a long way we went with the community of WoR and the developers of this game with it`s outstanding vision of a new kind of FPS. Not necessarily always content with the games development we still second this great idea and vision and enjoy any update which is thrown at us.

Five Years… this remains a feat also regarding internal community-work. It ain't just the COs and NCOs of our unit who fill the ranks of the 52nd with life; no its foremost those members who are standing fast in the Line of Battle as enlisted men and enjoy the historically correct formations and orders. And it is this that represents the 52nd New York in the first place; the historical understanding of the Line Infantry during the times of the ACW with all its pros and cons in the game. Since the foundation of the unit now five years back, always full attention was paid on the research of the correct historical orders and it was never about winning engagements at all costs but simply about the way a victory was gained or a defeat had to be accepted. In this regard a side note shall be put as the “German Rangers'' currently adapted a 50-page strong Drillbook which is mediated in our Drills and also executed in the Battles we take part of.

During this long time the “German Rangers” have not always been on the sunny side of life but have gone through some miserable times too. Sometimes member count exploded and other times we could count our combattants on one hand. Thus it is just the more pleasing that we can celebrate the fifth jubilee of our 52nd today.

The first Drill of the 52nd New York on the newly opened Union Drill Camp. Around May 2016:

One of the first “columns of Four” of the 52nd NY 2017:

First Drill with our Flag. Up until then just with the white side.

The regimental colors of the 52nd New York Infantry in its full magnificence. End 2018

Now some words about our flag

As with the historical units our virtual unit has its particular relation concerning the regimental color. In the ACW the flag had an immense meaning on and off the battlefield. It was the rally-point of the regiment and it bore the battle-honors. Also the enemy knew the respective colors of the opposing regiments and could thus make up whom they would have to fight.

Historically the flag was gifted to the 52nd on October 31st 1861 during a parade by some dames from Brooklyn New York. During that period the 52nd was trooping on Staten Island New York. In the course of this parade a certain judge Reynolds held a speech where he spake of the honor and devotion of all those “who came to us from a different continent” and who “offered the country a much higher and stronger loyalty than could ever arise from simple birthright; and they are cementing it in blood.” After this speech also Col. Frank held a speech in German and there was more exercising for the excited crowd. With the regimental colors the 52nd also got their flank markers in this ceremony.

Even with our virtual unit we have a particular relation to “our” flag. As soon as there was rumor that the units in WoR should get their respective flags we knew we wanted to be among the first units who would be able to carry their flag to battle. As it became clear that the flag of the 52nd would not be prioritised too high as it is a rather complicated flag and the unit not that well-known we decided to start our own backing project in this backing project. We found a designer who was able to create the flag according to the specifications by the devs. The result was then handed over to the devs and it was implemented to the game and we were indeed happy to be among the first units to carry their flag into battle. We are still very grateful to the willing backers and the devs too for making this happen. It is still a milestone in our development in the game.

Still classy material. The 52nd in Saris` "Fighting Regiments in War of Rights" Oct. 2018

Last but not Least: The 52nd in battle at Batallion-level. An Event of the United European Community. Sept. 2020

After this short abstract of highlights of our unit in the WoR Community we like to say thank you to those who helped us or were simple guides on our path through the years.

    THANK YOU

    The German Volunteers

Most of all we want to thank the members and staff of our TGV who are always there when there is a need to shoot each other on a high tactical level. Thanx go out to the 18th North Carolina, 8th Alabama und 2nd Delaware. Huzzaahh!!

    The United European Comunity

We say thank you to the members of the U.E.C. who make for challenging events each weekend at a very high level concerning also the historical battle tactics and orders. We say thank you to the 20th New York, 51st New York, 42nd Pennsylvania, 8th Florida, 4th New Jersey, 14th Louisiana, Jenkins Brigade, Pennsylvania Army a.o.

    Youtuber

We also want to thank the following Youtubers who help to draw attention to the game and the partaking units and also help the CO/NCO Corps learning from mistakes by their Streams of our varying events. Thanx go out to:

The members of the 52nd New York State Volunteer Infantry, Company A "German Rangers" and of the 1st New York Heavy Artillery Battalion "Baden Artillery"

Our highest gratitude goes out to the members of our unit. It's not the COs and NCOs who make up this unit. We are immensely happy that our unit is blessed by most devotional members from the enlisted men to the officer ranks who are able to turn a simple game into a historical and magic experience. We thank you the “German Rangers” and New York Gunners very much for your devotion towards this unit.

    New York Volunteers... EXCELSIOR!

Here is a Video from our Birthday Battalion Drill Event. We tested the smoke system a bit :P

It's hard to top this after such a detailed post, so I won't even try, but save the energy for the 10th anniversary.
It was a very "interesting" year for us, as it probably was for many. After our player numbers were record high in the winter months, regularly around 35-40 players, they unfortunately returned to normal at ~25 players after the end of the lockdown. We are glad that all our members are well.

In the spring, unfortunately, a until then important member of the company went on his way to the south. 2nd Lieutenant Fritz left us for Virginia. His place was taken by Sergeant O'Keefe, who was immediately convincing. All in all, the NCO corps was properly increased, as the numbers in the lockdown had made quite an impression. For a while, the idea of opening a second company was toyed with, but with the end of the lockdown and the subsequent lower player numbers, this goal was postponed for the time being, but not cancelled.

some goals were also achieved this year:

with the "Column by Platoons", the unit now masters almost the entire "School of the Company" from "Casey's Infantry Tactics". All relevant commands have been learned and sit sufficiently firmly to excel.
The skirmisher drill has been expanded and further learned according to Casey's. Here, it still needs to be practised more often. We still have to practise more often, but all commands are known as far as they go.
As artillery, we often worked as a battery and this allowed the artillerymen to show and teach the infantrymen their working environment.
Since the summer, we have also sporadically started the dismounted cavalry drill according to "Poinsetts". We also hope to be able to mount the horse soon.

The bottom line is that the unit is developing splendidly, even though our "Lady Liberty" is slowly becoming an old lady and we are one of the oldest units in the community, we are still fresh and dynamic.

We look forward to the future and wait to see what it has in store for us.
