Historically troopers within a platoon were placed in a squad of 4 men, each man having been numbered 1 - 4 and this would dictate the place within the formation they would be. When it came to battle upon the command of dismounting for battle the number 4's would remain behind the skirmish line with the horses (note there would also be a platoon mounted with sabers drawn acting as a reserve or support unit should they be required.) When it comes to our drill we do the same keep troopers who are numbered 4 behind the line remaining with the "Horses" (officers)
